I wouldn’t call this a head room type of preamp (It is a preamp really).
I think it will all depend on how much boost your amp’s front end can take before going into overdrive.
The only active bass I have is my Jag, and I was only playing around with the over driven sounds and through tube bass amps which aren’t really known for clean head room.

I don't know, both my 400+ and my CL have plenty of clean headroom if set right, on the other hand I don't like the sound of either when you slam the front end.
Also since this is a pre how does it sound direct for recording?

This plus a Hiwatt Slave would just destroy things. Or, maybe just this in general. Either way, destruction.

Not bad, but touchy.
I tried direct into the board, and of course got distortion (not the good kind)
Finally I used a di and had to attenuate the signal to keep from overdriving the board.
Later today I am going to plug it direct into the power amp and see how it sounds.
I was using my B-15 and V4-B which aren’t super clean head room amps, which is what I like about them.
I’ll also check it with my YBA-200 which has a normal and -6db input plus I can bypass the its pre and run it into the power amp.
More to follow.

Shit, that thing must be insanely loud then.

2 12Ax7s running at 300v.
Yes it is loud.

300v!? How the hell do the tubes not overheat then? That's a massive amount of potential!

I’ll have to measure the plate voltage to make sure of the exact voltage, but it’s not a problem.
Fenders and Marshal ran theirs close to 300 on the plates
There is lots of room in the box, almost as much air space as a tweed champ.

BIG KNOB MAKE BIG SOUND.

I exaggerated only 220v on the plates.
Using a ’51 Precision reissue (6.3k pickup) and the B15’s volume set at 9:00 o’clock I could get a nice clean boost up to 2:00 o’clock on the Klipper, at 3:00 it began to overdrive.
Unity is around 10:00 o’clock on the Klipper’s volume.
Obviously higher volumes on the B15 over drove with lower settings on the Klipper as do hotter pickups.
I plugged directly into the power amp and got a nice clean all the way up.
Not super loud but nice recording volumes and no overdriving the board through the mics (impedance could have been a factor)
I got the same results with the YBA200 just a lot louder.
I still prefer the sound going through the preamp.
MM
and yes PP the big knob does make big noise

Thanks for the heads up on this, got in last on the list before he closed it again

Congrats, you won’t regret it.
It does sound even better live
Now I’ll have to do some clips or a demo.
