I agree with everything that has been said. And not to beat a dead horse, but I feel like we've left something out. The Audience. In Cache Valley, where I live, bands are treated like some kind of disease. If you tell someone about a show, they slowly back away, as though from a knife wielding hobo. So, there aren't many shows to be had, unless you're strictly an oldies cover band, or strictly acoustic. That being said, Utah has taught me to hate the audience.

I've given up on being liked by or playing shows for the locals. Even the local musicians are strangely pigeon-holed, they are amazed by the sounds I've come up with, but don't think they're usable or musical in any way (not that they're especially strange by the standards on here). There's a local musician who gave up on the audience 50 yrs ago, he's made over 2000 recordings in his house, and not one of them has ever been heard by anyone else. I understand making music and putting so much effort into it because you enjoy it, but does it really mean anything if you can't share it? I don't care if they appreciate the effort I've put into making the sound I'm making just as long as they enjoy the sound.

Lots of places feature indie artists too...I'm sure some of you guys have a better idea of those places than I do.

Lots of places to put it that someone would hear it.
Hell, stick up a torrent, put it on rapidshare or mediafire..someone's going to download it.

You know, the audience won't know what has went into the process as Tom put it, and they won't know or care if you're playing pedal x, y or z. But we as players notice, and that in turn effects how we play at that moment in time, which the audience will notice. If you can get a pedal, sound, feel, whatever going the way you want at a particular moment that makes you play deeper and more in the moment..the entire band picks up on that and in turn the audience really picks up on it. So I think there could be arguments made either way.

It's true, it goes both ways. I always get complements on my sound[s]. I even take my board to folk/blues americana gigs and it goes over well with both the other musicians as well as the audience, I even get asked to take us off into psychedelic jams every now and then.

To me it doesn't matter what it takes to do your thing, you do it. I play what I feel fits at the time. I use the sounds that I feel will add to the overall musical whole at the time. I like the sounds I like and I use them. I don't use effect because I think other musicians will think I'm cool. I know that when push comes to shove I don't need them to get the job done, but I LIKE THEM. I see it as the same thing as what amp you use, what strings you like, ect, fuck anything else.

guys, don't get me wrong, I was NOT bashing anyone or anything or any opinion. I was just sharing my opinion, because most of you probably go any time I make any sort of comment about how much I like the old vintage fuzzes... I think it really doesn't matter to the audience no matter what you do. They can't tell the difference between a Marshall 1974 and a Marshall MG15, or a DS-1 and an OCD. I'm not gonna lie, I definitely prefer a nice OD to one of those Devi-Ever fuzzes y'all like so much, and maybe I don't totally "get" some of the popular effects... but... but... well I forgot where I was going with that

i think we all need to love each other. Spread the love guys! No reason to be angry or hostile for something as unique and individualistic as tone

Believe me no has gotten angry or hostile, we are all being very nice on ILF compared to other forums

Here's a funny one for you. I like Devi Ever's good ODs better then most of her fuzzes, I use a KP and a DB and find both to be some of the best pedal ODs I've come across in 18 years of playing.
My main fuzz is a copy with some mods [clean blend, tone, and octave on/off] of a Univox Supperfuzz [orange and blue version] by Katana Sound. It does crazy and over the top and it is a design from 1970.

My most "over the top" "modern" "crazy" fuzz is a "hachihachi shiki kebadate hizumaseki super oscillo fuzz" (88) by last gasp art laboratories. This pedal will out crazy a lot of devi's stuff yet most of it's settings are still very usable for cool and usable sounds, if you know how to set it. And that's kind'a the way with most of the crazy ones, it's how it is used and in what context just like anything. That s why a lot of demos that focus on making noisy sounds and solo aren't very helpful to everyone. In the mix [live or recorded] everything changes, most stuff I love when I play solo sucks in a band and the other way round you see.

I just like pedals more then playing well.
