Another algal bloom vote (and it can still sound huge if you want). You won't be able to get those tones from an ab-synth though.

Does the AB or the Rat cut through the mix well? What about the Great Wall? I'm leaning towards the Great Wall but I'm afraid of the possibility of it not cutting well..

I'm going to second the Red Llama vote. It's a really good balance between a fuzz & and an OD. Not too much gain, just enough to get wooly. Sounds good with every guitar & amp combo I've tried. Stacks really well with other stuff. Records like a dream.

with my rat I always cut thru the mix(I play with the volume at the max!!)...this was not the case when I used a big muff, I was always lost in the mix with the muff..

rats definatly cu through the mix. the muff does not at all, but when you use the rat>muff it gets some glorious wall of sound sounds and some amazing heavy fuzzs. again, rat would be best for this
or if you are looking for more lo fi, i think the TP does a good job at really trashy OD

i do indeed want a TP, just for those torn speaker tonezzzz.
but i'm in on both the Red Llama and i think the guitarist in my band has a Rat she never uses, so i'll steal it.

Rat > Muff is my favorite combo! Hands down...
Also, I'd check out this guy:

Rat>Shoegazer.= pyur buhtseks....it's like a doomsday device where you exponentially increase the number of women you impregnate with each footswitch, until the world ends.
308 Rats have gotten stupid expensive, but 308 Turbo Rats are still cheap. They're the same thing except for a diode or something.
