As for 09, Doom's new record was better than I expected. Not really sure why I had low expectations.
I think if you've disliked Mos Def's solo stuff, Ecstatic is probably your best bet. It's more focused, a bit experimental/unusual without being overly long.
And yeah--Doom's new record was good. Left me looking forward to the new Madvillain record...which is supposedly happening. But of course will happen on Doom's schedule--I expect it sometime between next month and 2012.

Man, I thought the opposite - I thought it was totally unfocused. It never cohered enough to move in any given direction.

i actually think that could be said of both his albums. hell even the Blackstar stuff to a certain extent. i think that lack of cohering is due to having so many different big name producers on one album. i mean when it works its good but i see it failing more often than not.
anyway. if Blackstarr does a "reunion" album, it should be solely produced by Dilla. or just one producer.

That may be difficult, considering that Dilla died a few years ago.
there's lots of Dilla beats floating around. lots. that's not even talking about teh beats some ppl are hoarding probs. plus when was the History thing done. not exactly sure but i think that was done posthumously.

That's actually a good point. Mos never really drops coherent albums. I don't think he approaches each project with a coherent aesthetic concept - Ghostface can have an album produced by 10 different people and it'll all fit together perfectly, for example, because he has a very strong aesthetic sense.
