i really liked the early, Hoagy Carmichael lying-in-the-gutter-looking-at-the-stars Tom Waits. he wrote some really beautiful songs back then, kind of a Tin Pan Alley John Prine in his emotional incisiveness and a lovely melodist, which is painfully rare. i'm not so fond of the modern, avant-gardey Tom...i kind of liked Beefheart better the first time around. it's no great achievement to do that kind of rackety growly shit.
