I can understand wanting a hardware drum machine but this would work for a little while at least, or it could be a backup solution.

Yeah I was thinking stealing my brother's ipod and doing that, but I don't like the idea of having to stop the track on my ipod after every song.

Get an MPC.
It's a total chameleon.
You can sample any sounds from any other machine, or off of records, or downloaded off the web.....etc....etc...
They interface with anything else MIDI very well.

Buying one MPC is like buying a thousand drum machines.

I own two.....so I guess I have two thousand drum machines.

I can't speak to Crocodiles, but that's what my band does. Beats and extraneous backing traxx on the computer, and then guitar-y noises and lead synths played over that. Works really well. We split the stereo signal, so click tracks for beat-less segments come through a amp pointed at us. Once my bandmate worked out the logistics, and got a mini-mixer to manage all of his signals (the iPod, his synth, kaoss pads and drum pads), life became super simple.

i just saw that Mika Miko is breaking up. kind of sad...

anyway. lately i have been seeing the Akai MPC 2000 going for decent used prices on craigslist. like under $400 n stuff. i'd get one of those if i could. more for sampling and chopping up phat beatz than for a drum-machine. better that than that hipster indie-rock Roland SP-404.

seriously. you get a drum-machine you just gotta own that motherfucker. lots of times cheap drum-machines sound much better ran out thru filters and other effects. lots of people have done more w/ less.

I'm too lazy to figure out how to use drum machines, so i just throw an equalizer, overdrive/distortion, verb or delay after this and then into my loop pedal

i have a Synsonics Drum machine a friend gave me that i run out thru my Kaoss Pad. i have yet to try it w/ delay or anything else though. it is fun but i have yet to incorporate it into anything i do yet beyond "bedroom tweaking"...
