I like the rucci stuff because I can plug it in or use a 9volt to power it. It's small and portable and easy to play single note or have a pattern. It's great for auditioning stuff or as an input when you wanna just play the pedals.

The Drone6 by Tataki is worth a try. I used to have the Rucci, but the Drone6 is more interesting to my ears, wilder I guess..
Pages 1-4 have some cool options. I own a Grendel, but for [hands-free] evolving background sounds, nothing's going to beat software ($0 - $10, no MIDI controller required).
Cosigned. The pedal version of the Grendel seems to be pretty widely available as well.
There's a softsynth version of the Lyra floating around somewhere, too.
