Have bought three cabs from TRM over the years, custom cabs to make combos out of existing heads, and always very satisfied.

I don't know about the quilter, but i play in a guitar+drums duo and can chime in about different cabs, as i tried multiple setups over the years: 2x12 ob, 2x12 cb, 4x12 with greenback, 4x12 with neodymium speakers (current), 2x15 oversized cab, 1 head+1 cab, 1 head+2 cabs, 2 heads+2 cabs.

It really depends on the kind of stuff you want to play, but personally I stick to the 1 head + 4x12 cab with neodymium speakers setup. The 4x12 may look big and heavy, but it weighs a lot less than what you'd expect (about half the weight of an orange 4x12--> it means you can carry it around by yourself - also I'd like to add that i hate those stock Celestion V30 in Orange cabs, or maybe orange cabs in general :erm: ), and the number of speakers helps keeping things clear and dynamic in a wide range of frequencies while maintaining a good amount of low end.

The 2x15 cab is good and bassy, but inevitably loses in attack and high freq response, while 2x12 open backs are a bit too mid-focused for my taste, and they surely don't give enough low frequencies.

Different story is a 2x12 closed back, which was almost perfect to me, but in my setup over a certain volume level, the speakers would get too overloaded (especially when playing over loops).

If I was building a new setup from zero I'd like to try a 2 heads+2 small cabs setup, with a 2x12 closed back paired with a 1x15 cab, to use the 2x12 alone when playing at home at low levels and then pair it with the 1x15 for rehearsals or live shows. Alternatively a good 2x12 combo + 1x15cab with dedicated head.

The best sound I ever got was with 2 heads, one paired with the 4x12 and one with the oversized 2x15, but obviously it was not practical. :

Anyway my general rule is: never buy a cab before trying it. Sometimes the apparently perfect cab won't match your setup no matter how much you tweak your amp.

EDIT:After re-reading it, I realized this was probably not helpful at all. :idk:

I have had perfectly decent luck buying cabs before trying :idk: but then I do not think I'm massively picky about them either. haha

I am not picky too, actually I don't even know what kind of speakers were into half of the cab I had/tried. I know I like some speakers more than others, but in the end I just have to play to see I like what I hear or not

I heard back from the guy at TRM and he said for a little extra he can add some handles but his current tooling setup can't accommodate stuff big enough to make the cab fit a 15". I actually pulled one of my old 4x12 cabs out of the basement this morning and was messing around with it. I think if I go pick up an eq pedal to throw in the amp's loop it might make a big difference. I'm still leaning towards ordering one of those 2x12's though. Putting 4 new speakers in my old $100 cab is probably not a wise way to spend money

Look at that old thing. Nobody wants to see that on their nice night out

ok super cool. did you stain / tolex them yourself or have him do it?

Yeah when I did a two piece thing before I was always happiest with a 4x12 behind me, but that was playing at venues with one vocal mic and nothing else. Most places around here have really good sound so I might be able to keep it a little smaller.

It's not the worst way to spend it!

I used to do similar stuff when jamming with just a drummer. Loud and slow Melvin inspired fuzzy stuff, with huge sounding fuzzy guitars. I had both a big bass rig and a big guitar rig. The signal was split up so that the bas amp would get a cleaninsh signal with an octave down in the chain. Dialed in quiet enough to just add enough tight lows without overdoing it and halfassingly making up for the lack of an actuall bass guitar. And obviously it pushed more air, coming from different directions, and makes your drummer hit harder, gives a bigger frequency spectrum and all that...

If you can't do anything eloborate like that, the hybrid cab might work I guess. Efficient speakers are the key here. I think these days V30's are out of fashion or something, but they still work for me. Can be found cheap/used any day of the week. I still like good old G12H30's a lot too, and WGS also has a couple options that would suit this style.
