...I personally don’t trust collector/emitter dirt demos. Go listen to them all...and how they allllllllllll sound like a Part Garden. His dirt demo will often sound WAY off compared to other demos of the same pedal. I’ve bought multiple dirt pedals he’s Demo’d and they sound NOTHING like his demo. Sure, some of that is set up and gear but it shouldn’t be that different. Seriously though, go watch 3 or 4 of his dirt demos then watch the Part Garden demo. Blindfolded you wouldn’t be able to identify any of em apart.
Noise Generator is a solid choice. And Megan L is probably my new favorite...awesome presentation.
Ponderer Sounds also a new fav.

Maybe I just really like the sound of the Part Garden (& should get one)?
You know whose demos all sound the same?
This guy:

Don't send him any pedals to try out!

So what have we learned? dirt pedals sound more similar than we want to admit and your own gear makes stuff sound different.raj007 wrote:...I personally don’t trust collector/emitter dirt demos. Re: Fuzz demos? Social Influencers? Whispers and rumors?
All of my favorite demo ppls tend to carve their own niche and have certain strengths, and C/E is no different to what Knobs (with his five note calling card) or Andy (with his thumb and love of Blur) or anyone else tends to do.....but I don't see that as a sticking point of distrust.
Anyway, I almost forgot to shoutout our own Eivind (oscillate avvay!) and ye olde Ghost Hip, both of whom I totally love seeing pop up on my feed and in late night fuzz searches:

Yar the big takeaway is that you can make pretty much any dirt pedal sound more or less the same. Which may or may not be revelatory depending on how often your setup changes or the tones you go for.goroth wrote:So what have we learned? dirt pedals sound more similar than we want to admit and your own gear makes stuff sound different.raj007 wrote:...I personally don’t trust collector/emitter dirt demos. Re: Fuzz demos? Social Influencers? Whispers and rumors?
Dang, people have some strong feelings about their demos. All good though. I have a few folks lined up now.
I will say the world of YouTuber demo makers is interesting from the perspective of someone looking to demo their wares. Pricing does not seem to be tied to audience size or skill...mostly just the ego of the YouTuber. *Most* of the people I spoke with were cool as heck, and obviously, the ones who you'll see demos by were reasonable and nice and cool and all that. But man...some folks expected a heck of a lot of money for a smaller reach than others who just wanted a free pedal. Weird world.
Side note: it really isn't that hard to make most ODs/Distortions/Fuzzes sound similar. They all overlap in sounds/settings, especially if you hit them really hard or really lightly. Where they differ is in their flexibility (frequency-wise and/or range of 'hair') and their feel (compression envelope, gating, sustain, etc). Both of those things are hard to show in demos. You kinda just have to play them...

Yeah, and even worse Instagram.
I've tried uploading stuff with all sorts of settings but it is really obvious that their compression algo focuses on video over audio quality.
Youtube on 1080p sounds pretty decent in my ears.

people expected you to pay them on top of the money they get from ads on their channels? WEAK!

Re: Fuzz demos? Social Influencers? Whispers and rumors?
At the beginning of the pandemic, Ryan from 60 Cycle Hum straight up said his payment for a demo is $500, but he's in advertising by day, so I suppose he has a personal precedent. It's also clear who his target audience is (TGP&W Facebook Dads who love their Sweetwater sales rep), so that's why companies constantly send him to seminars & blind amounts of pre-release gear for the hype train - that's a big pool of spenders. Just don't tell their wives!dubkitty wrote:people expected you to pay them on top of the money they get from ads on their channels? WEAK!

Re: Fuzz demos? Social Influencers? Whispers and rumors?
He’s not with reverb anymore? I like him as a person but his demos are never anywhere close to what I’m interested in, often pedal-wise and also playing wise so I always skip over them. But I support his desire to demo pedals and make a living, I’m not here to hate on anyone.dubkitty wrote:Andy of Andy's Demos would probably give you more exposure than any other 5 accounts combined. since he's on his own now he's doing less mainstream/more "boutique" demos than were allowed by PSG/Reverb. couldn't hurt to try it.
For me Janek Gwizdala has made some pretty good bass specific gear videos. I seem to really like his videos whereas other bass specific videos such as “The Bass Channel” I avoid - I can’t tell you why. I just don’t like it.
Personally I really enjoyed the interplay/personalities of Pedals And Effects. I hope Juan is doing well in his recovery. They had a good thing going and it’s really difficult to work in that format of going back and forth with that much chemistry. I found that “That Pedal Show” which is a blatant copy does not have the same personalities happening. I started watching one on the FM4 and it seemed like they were just figuring it out as they went along. Like motherfucker I do not have 45 minutes for this!! Whereas I’m willing to watch a whole hour on P&E on a pedal I will never buy.....
