Re: Is there a "wow" (tape) effect?

ezhi & aka polarized tape flutter? got one on the way. i’ll let ya know if it bangs

I just got a Midfi Scrape Flutter, and it’s a different sound than the majority of the “tape” sounds described here. Scrape flutter is a timbral variation in tape recordings due to friction from the mechanism. I had to look it up, I wasn’t familiar with the term. The pedal is envelope controlled, gives you everything from subtle pitch flutter to full-on, blown out speaker distortion. It’s very unique and I like it quite a lot, but I don’t think it’s quite what the OP is describing. The Tensor does one of the better tape stop sounds I’ve come across, and the Cooper FX Generation Loss is still my favourite lofi modulation. The CBA version has separate controls for wow and flutter.niftyprose wrote:UglyCasanova mentioned Mid-Fi. The Scrape Flutter ( https://www.midfielectronics.com/scrape-flutter ) is Doug's present offering, although my own preference is for the (sigh) elusive random chorus which he produced in limited numbers a couple of years back with which it obviously shares DNA.
Going further back, Holowon's Tape Soup ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYDs7fbAfyo ) would be worth checking out, although for my money it lacks the finesse of the Mid-Fi box.
Came here to post this ^Heraclitus Akimbo wrote:Recovery Cutting Room Floor? (not stereo, though.)
Hey @niftyprose, I just got the pedal on Monday, but in addition to using it in the effect loop of my rubberneck and reverb, one of my intended uses is in the effect loop of the EHX superego. When i get around to that I’ll let you know what I find. So far it’s a super fun pedal!niftyprose wrote:Useful perspective from Blood_mountain there on the Scrape Flutter. The pedal is dear to my heart because it does both warbles and distortion in a small footprint with minimum controls.
I don't own one yet, so the following should be taken with a pinch of salt. However, having listened to all the demos I could, it seems to me that the warble is (ah) consistent but the fuzz seems to set in at much lower o'clocks on some than others. I think this reflects the amount of signal being sent to the pedal ie it crunches more with a humbucker.
My own projected use is with a Freeze-type pedal so presumably I can dial in gain to some extent by tweaking the previous pedal's output knob. But the ideal arrangement would be to have a gain trimpot inside the Mid-Fi device. Mine would be set to delay the onset of fuzz until early afternoon.
Best, NP
i own a Scrape Flutter & this is a better description than i could come up with! i really like it, especially set fairly subtle. it does something sort of unpredictable, but intriguing. i've used it a lot on recordings to give individual tracks some unusual texture.Blood_mountain wrote: I just got a Midfi Scrape Flutter, and it’s a different sound than the majority of the “tape” sounds described here. I am having fun with it in the effects loop of the rubberneck - I just posted a quick clip on my IG this morning if anyone wants to hear it - @audio_semaphorevoerking wrote:i own a Scrape Flutter & this is a better description than i could come up with! i really like it, especially set fairly subtle. it does something sort of unpredictable, but intriguing. i've used it a lot on recordings to give individual tracks some unusual texture.Blood_mountain wrote: I just got a Midfi Scrape Flutter, and it’s a different sound than the majority of the “tape” sounds described here. Cool, thanks for the heads up. I'm following!PeterBregman wrote:You should check out @kinotoneaudio on instagram. It's not out yet, but they're working on a "tapes" pedal that does just that. It's still in development, but it's going to be rad.
This looks very interesting....PeterBregman wrote:You should check out @kinotoneaudio on instagram. It's not out yet, but they're working on a "tapes" pedal that does just that. It's still in development, but it's going to be rad.
