That is rad. I have a friend who uses it really well and I love the sounds he gets out of one but whenever I try I hate it.

Count to 5. It just wasn't my thing I guess.

Maybe the Super Ego? I love it when I use it...but I rarely do. Yet, I can't bring myself to get rid of it...or use it.

I love them, but I never make music where those sounds make sense, and I'm incapable of making music where they do.

There's no category of fx that I don't like. I can't say "I hate ring mods", or flangers, or whatever. It's more about specific pedals.
I wanted to love the Nemesis. When it came out it felt like a delay for me. But I just can't bond with it, its digitalness is too prominent. Still love the shifter mode but that's about it.
Same with the Dba fuzz War. I love the idea of this loud angry raw fuzz, but it sounds too harsh for me. I'm saving it anyway, cos if one day I play in band with a full cranked Marshall it's gonna be the shit. Till then, can't use it, though I'm a fan of Dba delays.

So, can I make a few suggestions based on what I'm hearing?



I think some of you may be happy with some of your effects if you use them in a mixer or turn the mix down if they have it. I've found different things work better in a Matrix type mixer (I have the Klein Bottle, which can fix a LOT of issues). That being said. I still hate the things I said.

Big Muffs have never worked for me, especially in a band context. Even with a mid control to fix the scoop. I want to understand the love for it, but I don't.

Hey, you're not the only one!

A friend loaned me his model from 1974 and I also owned a Classic NYC model for a while. I tried to like it, but I can't. The same goes to the BOSS DS-1 and the Ibanez Tube Screamer. It's not my sound at all.

I have never gotten along with a Tubecreamer or boutique clone. I barely even like Klones, but I use mine as more of a dirty volume boost / country lick sound.

I love Big Muffs but I can see the reasons why many of you guys don't bond with them. I think enjoy the Bug Muff because it was the first or second pedal i ever got and i sort of learned my way because i was forced (didn't have money for anything else, as was too young and totally out of the buy/sell thing).

Never bonded with any kind of tremolo. I like how it sounds, but i can count on a single hand the number of times i saw myself using it in a context different from sergio leone-insipred-jams.
Also, monophonic octavers: i hate those things. Everytime you play more than one note everything becomes total nonsense. If it's in a fuzz that's OK, it's part of the game, but if i want and octaver to do just clean octave give me polyphony (or a bass player).

Wolf Computer. It sounds rad as hell, super versatile, makes me play differently, but it never makes its way into a project. It kinda became a pedal I only used to break away from my normal routine so I just recently got rid of it.

Any kind of oscillating fuzz/dirt. It just sounds like my normal shitty guitar playing but with an annoying sound layered on top. Also, I've recently come to terms with the fact that I don't enjoy playing guitars nearly as much as I enjoy modding them and using them as sound sources. It makes me feel a little sad and guilty. I feel bad for the guitars.
It's never been comfortable for me to play a six string, and I've never had an "aha" moment where I felt like I was doing anything more than messing around and sounding like crap.
Bass is still enjoyable though, as are other things.

Excuse my ignorance but could you give me an example of a "clangy" od? All I can think of is the old BBC kids show "Clangers" I used to watch on VHS whenever I visited my nan in England.

Hey now, this is a good thing. Most of my pedals don't go on my board. Break away from normal routine- or just mess around with-pedals are great! Dwarfcraft for example, is one of, if not the all time favourite builder of mine, simply cause their stuff just inspires me and makes me think differently. That said, I've only ever had one dwarfcraft pedal (not counting the paraloop) as a regular on my board, the ECT, which is always the first or second pedal on my bass board. However, most of my life I have not played bass.

Not heard any of those I think. Infanemn in general being one of those builders I feel I either missed out on or just didn't quite understand when they were around (they aren't anymore, right?).

And yes, love me a bit of Clangers with Soup Dragon on the side, haha.
