Really? Can't say I agree with you on that one. Yeah the 44 tracks may be terrible but I think all of mellon collie and it's b-sides were brilliant.

Take Me down is the only track I could label as filler, just because it seems they have it in there for james, not because it fits with the vibe of the album.

The theory I've developed about Mellon Collie, in conversation with a friend who is also really into SP, is that the strength of the overall album vibe allows some songs that would be inconsequential on their own to be listenable in the album context.

Obviously there's a lot of SP love around here so there's no point in getting into any sort of larger argument but seriously, "In The Arms of Sleep" is pretty boring.

Except for "Ghosts", which was fan-fucking-tastic

by itself I think in the arms of sleep wouldn't be too entertaining, but I think in context the ebow leads and ambient qualities are a nice break before 1979 kicks in. I think the order of the tracks played a good part in making that album a treat.

This is definitely true. It's very well sequenced and very well recorded, with a consistent quality and characteristics to the sound even when tracks are based in radically divergent instrumental elements. This is why I listen to it all the way through even though there are a number of songs on there that I would never cue up on their own.
