Gladwell's 10,000hrs, with determination for "sounding good" rather than "being original". When a song or recording appreciates with replay value, is it more because of the former or latter? Also perhaps a topic for another thread: there's an interesting duality between remaining original and changing with the times, evolution
true maybe another thread someday but no I'm not asking for world changing, i understand styles are styles but what i am at is not where i can go well this song is like this song mixed with this song, because if you are just to sound good you might as well record covers.
I always set out to write stuff that's different, then finish it and think "hey this is x crossed with y" so I'm sympathetic to other people who do that.
Can relate x2
And yeah I get it, I think @Mudfuzz Sounds like you're sick of stale shit
I reject the presupposition where 'sounding good' is limited to material that's been-there-done-that, beaten-to-death or has to be safe. The bigbrains in hollywood need to take the hint, because what (they) are making releasing is neither fresh, original nor good.

If anyone wants to take a listen to my album I'd be really interested in what you think I've cribbed in composing the tunes.
I just write the stuff that comes out of my fingers, so I'm curious as to what you folks can hear in that.

Sleep - The Sciences
Incinerated - Lobotomize (or is this 2017 issued on LP in 2018)
Body/Head - The Switch
Portal - Ion
Kevin Drumm - Inexplicable Hours
Lots of Sissy Spacek records
Basically almost everything else I’ve bought has been noise tapes or reissues

Oh! The new Thou records have been great.
And the Acid Cannibals EP, even if my favourite song of theirs isn't on a record yet.

The new album by The Innocence Mission is beautiful.
Here's three songs performed live:

Here's my favourite song—at least at the moment—from the album:
