Started typing something on page 1, lost in a tab yesterday and now CoreyY has it about covered.
1x12, 2x10, 2x12, 4x10 4x12 w/e. Using different speaker size/sensitivity/cab config to add or reduce volume is a great way to control levels once you've found "the one" amp you want to play, or would rather be playing.
For guitar in particular I prefer British tube amps with a pair of EL34 or kt66, to 6L6, 6550, 7027 etc... specifically 50w heads are personal preference in terms of power:weight, drive response; especially when el34-loaded.
They run, like the VR6 engine of amps
