Bass drum mics eg akg d112 can be cool on bass cabs especially with something else, say a 57 mixed in for the higher end
But I think di with a cab sim sounds good enough that it's now my go to on all recordings because easy and sounds good.

I would suggest a Sennheiser 421 to mic the bass cab. Not cheap but not super expensive either. I also like to split the signal before the pedals and take a clean DI. It helps to add clarity and then you can add as much or as little as you want when mixing the track. I also recommend the Alesis SR 16. It was Godflesh drum machine of choice so it sounds perfect for what you want to do. You can layer sounds on it and detune to make them bigger. As far as interfaces I just use the Focusrite. It serves me well.

Sennheiser 421 is awesome and a good suggestion! Forgot about it.
