It's a stripped down chip, just like the GT-1 is stripped down from the 100/001.

The GT-1 and Katana use a different processor than the 100/001? I didn't know that. What is the GT-1 missing besides stereo processing?

My guess is it's a crippled version thereof so you can't load the firmware etc.

Stereo processing, the GT-100's FX loop (which is also missing from the GT-001), some effects are in different places for CPU overhead.

Digging around in FxFloorboard, the only things I see the Katana actually lacks are the parallel path and (I think) the extensive assign options. In an effort to keep things simple, Boss made the Katana effects incredibly unwieldly outside of presets.

I really hope they keep the firmware updates coming to address this. The Head has a MIDI in, but almost nothing is mapped. Why?

I have wanted to try a Katana but based on this thread I think I would end up getting rid of it the same way I have with every ME and GT pedal (I think I have owned most) I love them but I hate the editing.

The digital dirt on them sounds very good though, I thought the Rat on the last GT I had was very very close, closer than zooms get


Can echo what others have said on here as well that the bitquest digital dirt is very very nice sounding

In terms of sensitivity and timbre, even playing two neighboring keys on an electric piano can produce vastly different results.

I made an offer on a lightly used Source Audio Kingmaker on Reverb and the seller accepted. So I'll post some clips after it comes in. I was interested but iffy on the demos I heard, because they seemed to lean towards crapped out octave fuzz or really slick scooped Muff tones, but then I found one that was an off the cuff shootout with a Scarab Fuzz that sounded really heavy and nasty. Then I saw you can actually load any sound from any of the dirt pedals from the series, so I figured I'd give it a go.

It's funny, I think I would like my Katana even more if it didn't have any effects at all. The straight-up amp side of things is great, especially for the price.

The Cube distortion on the Alexander Syntax Error is fun and gross.

The Frantabit has some gnarly digital dirt. Crazy squishy laser octave fuzz. It's my favorite part of the pedal for sure

You're not LOADING any engine, FYI, they're all in it (you just select what's there).

The joke is that the "amp side" for preamp and voicing is...the GT-engine.

Yeah, I guess I just mean once I heard a demo that sounded like a real world sound (not one produced to make something sound as good as possible, with no context) and saw that all 3 dirt pedals contain all the same tones to edit, I was sold on it.

Also...PREAM, obviously.

The Source Audio Kingmaker Fuzz arrived today. I just had about 10 minutes to quickly try out the stock presets. They sounded really good, I was impressed. I'm looking forward to doing a deep dive with the editor.
