My time is...random.

Because I sleep and wake when the pain meds and the songs in my head let me!

if it is true that time is a construct of the human mind
:joy: that you were/are/will be here some of the "time" which is to say, always.

thx for the constantly useful reminders that the gear cycle is an economic constuct.

Hello guys, exhuming this thread in case other Rainer shadowers pass this way.

I kept researching. It seems likely that Mr. Ptacek favoured the Digitech PDS8000, Digitech's large-box twin-footswitch delay/looper, at least in the later part of his career. Bill Frisell used the same device for many years.

The PDS8000 provides only 8 seconds of looping time, but it's simple, easily controllable, and has a 'varispeed' capability which most of its successors lack. The grainy 12-bit audio means that the echoed signal sounds entirely separate from the source instrument, which adds to its appeal for many players.

I've seen it namechecked by a number of pedal builders, notably in Sonic Crayon's writings around the Mechanical Sun delay. I'm not keen on buying one myself, but find the idea of a 12-bit delay/microlooper very appealing. Watch this space.

If you want a more involved (but still 'just knobs') option, including some CV control...stop and acquire a RDS-XXXX delay.

The "Time Machine" 8000 has 8 sec and better looping capacity; the others are simple sample & hold, but all of them are built on the same 12 bit circuit, and crucially, the "varispeed" you speak of is non-destructive to the loop held as is the modulation capacity - mod circuit can be tweaked non-destructively as well to what's in the loop/delay line. I've used the RDS 3.6s for ages, although I've owned all of them at one point or another. They also have a bit more headroom than the pedals and don't have the period ugly pedal buffer circuit.
