That being said, I think it would have been nice if EGC had reached out to Hinds to tell him they liked his design and wanted to market it more. I dunno how I feel about it outside of that, seems like a weird situation for sure.
"I dunno how I feel about it." Have you not gotten to that part of Marxism yet? Don't worry. Freshman year is always the worst.
Wow, nice zinger you capitalist dog. ;)

Brent has been complaining about EGC for years. He claims he couldn't get Kevin to make him another guitar. FWIW he was also bitching about Gibson making him a silver burst V and charging a lot of money for it and then charging other people less for it. :idk:

It could be that he was wanting them to build the things faster for him than the normal wait.. even with the cutting in line aside doing things out of sequence costs a manufacturer more

So if I'm interpreting this right, he's mad that he asked EGC to make a guitar to his specs for $5k and then when people kept asking for it, they turned around and sold it as a signature model for $3k.

I mean I'd definitely be mad if he never even asked me to use my name for the design, but on the other hand EGC made those things for years and he never said anything until now.

There was a thread about this on the Aluminium Axes page on FB which appears to have been deleted/I can't find it. Someone posted some screenshots he had with Kevin which claimed he paid $5000 for three EGC's, that a bunch were made and a few were destroyed in the prototype phase but he really ended up paying about $1500 for each guitar.

It seems like a weird thing to take sides on because Brent is an alcoholic attention seeker who whinges a lot and Kevin has the communication skills of the average doughnut. We're probably not going to see any invoices, won't know how much was actually paid for what and whatever happens, the aluminium circle-jerk will always protect Kevin from blame regardless of what he does.

I think there's also something to be said for "designing a guitar" which is just a flying v made of a different material with an aluminium neck slapped on it. Also, it seems fairly obvious that production models will run cheaper than the first few? You'd know how to make them and a lot of the legwork is already done by the time you're doing production models, much less time will be involved and there's no design stage there. Meh.

I would have thought that it made more sense for an angry rant to be an incoherent jumble of grammar meat.

Yeah. These are pretty much my sentiments. We won’t get the truth in this (as if we care, this isn’t some Weinstein/Spacey sexual assault shit).

So if you have an opinion on one thing you have to have an opinion on every other thing ever or you're inconsistent. Interesting.

On topic, paying more for the first one of a thing is totally reasonable, and the guitar is a flying v anyway lol

I only clicked on this thread because in my mind ECG is a subset of the NTE electronics delivery system, which due to their refusal to list stuff by proper part number has branded knowledge of their existence in my brain.

Regarding the actual thread, I feel that if I'm charging a customer development costs (read as more than I would normally charge) on a custom build it is because they will have the only one in existence, usually if it's a good idea I'll absorb additional costs with the mutual understanding that the idea will probably surface in future work for others.

I highly doubt that is the situation here. My guess is that the original instruments were built on a handshake/T&M basis (the design work, after all, has been done for decades) for which the original customer was charged. Then EGC was able to exploit jigs/etc that had to be fabricated for the pilot build to build more when demand presented itself. I think if you want something to remain unique (especially a something in a highly visible place) it needs to be in written form, otherwise people gotta make a living...
