"Cut narrow, boost wide."
General philosophy for effective equalization. Meaning be surgical when cutting, greasy with boosting.
When a mix is "not right" try cranking/sweeping a parametric [first + then -] to expose what you're hearing, then apply solutions.

"It's easier to remove what's there than add what isn't"
More basic "no duh" stuff. Instead of trying to boost all of your bottom end, try dialing back everything but [the bass].

The Pultec trick
On Pultec-style/EQP circuits...select 30, 60 or 70 Cycles as the corner frequency. Crank BOOST. Grin all the way to +14. :hobbes:
Hehs. Now then, the *real pultec trick* is you set the corner [esp at 100] and use both BOOST and ATTEN knobs to taste, together.
The corner frequencies for each band's +/- aren't perfectly aligned, allowing for wide, pleasant sounding curves.
By using both controls at once, it creates a pocket for lower mids and tightens up a bottom end like magic. It's a beast.

This!! I'm a EQ nut and I have spent so much time researching what amp EQs I liked and even hough I am a big fan of powerful sweepable EQs and baxandall style EQs the real trick is to get away with as little EQ as possible.

a cool trick (for bass atleast) is to violently boost around 2.2k, it cuts like an anglegrinder through butter

Why not? I've used a 1969 (year of manufacture) LA2A in a feedback loop at a fucking noise show. Quality matters.

Back to EQ, two units I enjoy are an old Wandel Goltermann Type OB passive bandpass unit - just a single channel/frequency that gets close to resonant filter sounds but is extreme and full of iron, and the Rauland 6326 graphic EQ, which doesn't sound amazingly musical but makes up for that by having a kill switch for each band which is loads of fun.
