Roland boutiques and new SE-02

Necro! I was about to post a thread about these, but turns out we already have one.

I've been gassing for a cheap polysynth lately and have been kind of tempted by these little synths. I'm mostly looking for something to make Blade Runner sounds. I really like the sounds of the SE-02, but it's not actually polyphonic and I already have other monophonic synths. So I think I'm kind of leaning towards the JX-03.

Or should I just go for the Korg Minilogue route?

I completely 180’d on the JP-08. The sub menus are still shitty, but I’ve learned to live with the sound coaxing and love the jupiter sound

You can poly-chain SE-02s to get as many voicings as you need. You could also sample a single SE-02 and then play it as a poly synth that way.

I didn't really care for the Minilogue. The sound was fine, but the menus took all the fun away for me.

---It is my strong suggestion to let the NAMM dust settle in 3 months. Korg is letting it be known, that they'll unveil a new poly machine in LA at the end of January. Also, the SE-02 is just the first of multiple collaborations. ---Would they release a poly unit so soon? I'm not sure. I do think, though, that more analog polysynths are coming in 2018.

The problem with chaining multiple SE-02s is that I would require multiple SE-02s, which kind of defeats the inexpensive goal.

I'd probably be able to play a Minilogue locally first, so I might look into getting some more experience with it.

I was also tempted by the Behringer Deepminds. Might see if I can find one of those locally to test out. The 12 is definitely out of my budget, but I might be able to stretch it to a 6.

Definitely sounds like a good idea to wait until after NAMM though

For blade runnery types of sounds, you’re going to get a lot closer with the JP-08. It’s only four voices, but it can get surprisingly massive with just four. The biggest difference is that the filter doesn’t have the same character as the CS-80, but it still gets plenty brassy if you want it to.

Yea, four voice on the architecture Roland is using gets you a lot of places.

I'm still finding new stuff in the System-1, and it does stuff very much in the classic 80s Roland synth ballpark with ease (and then some).

I’ve had the JX03, JU06, JP08, and VP03 at different times, ultimately only hung on to the VP03. Of the others, I probably liked the JU06 best (simplest setup, and I thought it worked the best with fuzz), I’d consider getting that again...

Keep an eye out for a used System-1 - if you search, you can find all the plugouts for it for free as well.

It's got just a hair more under the hood (and no menu-diving) and the switchable synth engines with the plugouts are amazing, being able to switch around between the two without lag, along with presets doing the same.

Honestly: the only one of the boutiques that caught my attention was the 303. This may be because I have been really into acid lately but I feel like the other boutiques does things that synth you can get for the price used does better. This is probably the case f the tbo3 too but it's just something especially mojo about roland reissuing the 303. Well "reissue" since its digital

I keep telling myself that I should be happy with a Monologue and Mininova, but I can't stop wanting the System-1.

There really isn’t any competition at that price-point? The combination of ease of use, sound quality, and features really is unparalleled for $300. Sure, you could get a microkorg/mininova/micron for cheaper used, but I’d much rather program a patch with one of the boutiques than one of those.
