I'm fine with my 24 3/4" (or whatever the ACTUAL measurement of Gibson scale length is) using that .090 thru .020w set. Yeah, it's absurdly heavy and I have to modify my guitar, but that's what backups are for!
Quite honestly, I love my amp and speaker setup (Hartke 3500 head w/ Behringer cab), but I do wonder if I could do better, cab-wise. I don't go bone crushingly low
all the time, but I do like my fair share. Home base for me is in the C standard to D standard range, occasionally dropping the sixth for drone-y stuff, but I have to admit that this G standard business is quite fun! Dropping that G lets me play some Meshuggah-esque 'chug-chug-thump' type stuff.
Most people think I'm crazy (my friends repeatedly tell me to just get a bass), but I don't really care. I have a few guitars in different tunings, and I find that the lowness of them works for the style that I play (I like to call it post-sludgegaze, or something relatively similar), but I digress...
I'm glad to hear a bass player's input, though! Quite honestly, the thought of a 'lead bass' makes me intrigued. I'll see what I can do around here, but I'll definitely try to get some stuff out to you over the next few months.
What chaos will be created?

Collaborate on post-sludgegaze chaos? Hellz yeah! Hit me up whenever...
Also, while I've never played through a Sunn, they do seem to be the amp of choice for choosey sludgemongers. I'm sure a cab would help as well in terms of channeling the actual sonics, but I have no idea what would work best. I'm a devoted 2x10 / 4x10 / 6x10 -er myself.
