You are going to get that "thin" sound no matter what. Compared to something like a telecaster, I guess its similar...but you aren't going to get the range of tones you can get with the selector switch on a fender. It's pretty much a one-sound kind of guitar.
Actually, I've heard that these new ones in the Hornet are upgraded, more well balanced and hotter. I'd get one but I don't really need it and I don't feel comfortable giving them money.

the pickups have actually changed since the originals. my original danelectro pickup is housed in an actual lipstick pick up and runs at about 3.3K. in the '90s they run a bit hotter at 4.0k and now seymour duncan has changed them again to 4.3K. the original has a darker twang tone to it, where-as the 90s reissues have a very bright twang.
i've owned many vintage and reissues danos and "thin" is not how i'd describe their tone. "twang" is a lot better word and i get plenty of bass. the vintage one has a darker twang whereas the newer ones sound a lot brighter. i've also found the low output of the pickups smooths out fuzz. i play both a few reissues and vintage danos regularly and their is no 'overlap' in the tones. the bridge can take a little time to get used to but overall they are quality guitars for the price.
now you know why they call me benelctro.

Yeah my U2 gets plenty of of low end on the the neck pickup. Plug it through a muff and it's a blast to play with. Danos are a unique bread, sometimes I feel like playing mine and other times I can't vibe. But when I can vibe it's a great experience.
My advice: buy used and rock the fuck out.

The Hornet's tone (reissue), reminds me of a poor mans Jag.
If you want hotter pup's you could do this:

I'm wanting to try one out with my amp before I decide. I've got a Peavey Triumph PAG 60. It's such a sweet dark amp. I'm thinking the '67 would complement it nicely.

Interesting thread guys. Here's my 3 cents
I just got one of these.
first, I had no idea about the political issue OR the hype. I don't know how I feel having put money in their pockets if they use some of it against peoples' basic human rights. But through ignorance, I have. Maybe I'll take some of the money I saved buying this instead of a Jazzmaster and donate it to the opposite cause. take a penny, leave a penny and my karma will wash, right?

second, I was surprised at the quality of this thing (where it counts). The aluminum pop can control panel, semen swirled pickguard, and toothpaste cap knobs are crap, but that's the point. If you need custom inlaid rare wood, precious jeweled, wieghted and balanced tone knob, then this isn't your thing anyways. But the vintage look tuners are nice and tight and smooth with obvious modern tolerances, the fretboard and frets are perfectly dressed and crazy comfortable. the maple neck it straight and seated razor tight into the pocket. The jack, pots, and switch are not cheapos. The bridge and vibrato are weird, but they do the job. A metal nut and wooden bridge are a cool combo for an electric

. The vibrato does the job and comes right back to tune. Overall, the action, playability and bone structure on this thing are great.
third, AND it sounds fantastic. The lipstick pickups are hotter than the vintage and have a much better bass response. Clean tone is nice and jangly without being tinny. Great percussive response to picking and muting. Dirty and it ROARS. Nails the Sonic Youth/Dead Milkmen/Man or Astroman? tones I love and pulls off spaghetti western themes in its sleep. This thing gives me all the attitude and punkness that I just couldn't coax out of my Parker

which is going up for sale now.

I play guitar (and bass) through an Ampeg 115 and this guitar definitely benefits from the bass response and dark EQ. This guitar, this amp, and my Devi Ever Bit Mangler made me

see I like that I dont think it could make up for the prop. 8 stuff but the world can always use more music. wait did the owner of danelectro donate to prop 8 or did the company? HUGE difference. The people individually can do whatever they want with their $ I have a problem when its the company that is doing it.

Alright guys, fair enough.
To be honest, I just don't hear a difference between the vintage danelectros from 40 years ago, the '90's guitars, or today. It all pretty much sounds the same to me.
When I think "bass," I think a Les Paul kind of tone. I just don't get that out of the DANO guitars.
Maybe I'm naive, but to me a lipstick pickup is a lipstick pickup; a single-coil is a single coil; a humbucker is a humbucker. I guess I've just never really thought about it more than that.
I'm more of the mind of like, "oh, this would sound kick-ass with a Paul" and then I just grab a paul and play it.

To my ear, to say these pickups are "upgraded" seems more like hype than any real distinction.

I don't think its thee guitar to goto for bass, but I thought describing dano's as thin was a little harsh. I play through a Peavey classic 50 and I can get a nice well rounded sound out of the middle/neck pickup selection.

I put Dano on my "Buy used" list. I won't support the company, but I can't deny they have some cool stuff...
