My fav is the Effectrode PC2A. A premium, yes ($250 secondhand if you're lucky) but they're still half the going rate of OEM Ross comps

They destroy every other 2knob I've tried. Especially fav w/bass; the ability to compress, limit, or use as a boost & do all of them well.
IDK about active pickups, but it has a 1Mohm input and works well with hot sources...at least everything else I've thrown at it.

I like EQD's the Warden, which I don't think was mentioned. Fairfield's the accountant I lovelovelove, however I wish it had more control though, it's made me go through it twice now.
I'm going to try the new Orange compressor sometime soon, either that or the Mxr studio comp.

What's your opinion on the Roger Mayer RM58 and the API TranZformer?
Haven't played either!
I had a Warden at a point, and eventually sold it. It has a great control set, but I didn't think it had much character. Like I said though, I really have issues with compressors
I like my signal to keep a pretty wide dynamic range, so I don't really enjoy stacking compression with any kind of gain pedal—my biggest application has been with cleans. After having a saturated sound and going back to a clean tone, I often find that my base amp sound will sound a bit weak in comparison, so I've experimented a bunch with my base clean sound having a compressor on it to give it some more fullness / presence. Tbh though, a boost does the job just as well, if not better... less compression, none of the pump that I'm not really into.

Quite happy with the Accountant and, after trying many others, it has slowly crept up to be my favorite. A nice comp to check out on the cheap (especially used) is the Ninevolt Home Run King.

I used to have a G&L Interceptor that was crazy hot, even in passive mode. My amp could handle it but some of my pedals didn't like it. Anyways, I just rolled the volume knob down, NOT ideal if you use your volume knob while playing or for muting, since finding the same spot isn't always easy. But in my case it worked just fine.

well fuck. i tried some comps at work today. none of them did the trick. i'll still probably pickup an accountant for use with guitar, and maybe try it's pad mode for bass. but otherwise i'm gonna probably have to rewire my bass passive. fuck.

The Boss LM-2 is shit hot man, I love the thing. Super cheap, anything from subtle limiting to balls out squish. Has a DBX VCA chip in it (I think). Chronically underrated bit of kit.

i think thats the one pudding has, well idr, he has a boss compressor, an older one, it's pretty sweet. that's what convinced me i needed a compressor, besides the suggestions to tame my bass with one.

I play bass for reference
I need to try an Accountant for sure. I forgot to mention the Sfx Micro-comp as one of my faves.

Did you try the MXR Bass Studio Comp? I've heard good things about that one.

I have the Mayer RM58, and the 615 Limiter/Compressor. I use them in my guitar chain, and they are wonderful. I love them better than any others out there.
While some say they can be noisy, I haven't had that problem with my EHX Blackfinger. I did put 2 x NOS Mullard l61s in it, but unless its dimed, which I don't do, its very quiet.
I like o run the EHX into 1 of the Mayers, tube, into Solid State, but you have to be careful not to run them to hot, or you will get noise, but are great if dialed in correctly.
I would guess the Effectrode is probably a better pedal than the EHX, but Ive had the Blackfinger since 2004, and its served me well.
But IMHO its hard to beat either the RM58, or the 615.
615 is Highly Recommended for the $$$. Has a 10Hz-100KHz Frequency Response, and is also Optimized for Digital, with Feedforward Design. Cornish also uses this design.
615/RM58 runs either Line Level, or Instrument Level.
