Go ahead and grab all the moog stuff. Animoog is essential, but filtatron, mod15 are damn fun. Model D is compelling enough that it's kept me from impulse buying a behringer.
Patterning and or patterning 2 are classic at this point. Borderlands, Beepboop, Spacecraft, Synthscaper...

does anyoneuse audiobus or any other apps that allow you to chain multiple apps together? I have an older ipad that I run audiobus and record into nanostudio.

Audiobus is outdated. Aum and ApeMatrix are the way to go nowadays.

Guessing they probably don't since my ipad 3 caps out at I believe software version 5? but both reference audiobus in their descriptions.

Oh yeah, a lot of newer apps wouldn't work on that. It's the crux of an ipad musician.
But yeah, if you can sling it ApeMatrix is so amazing. Being able to chain and feedback all of the many ipad effects and sound manglers is absolutely entrancing. I mean, it's why matrix mixers are so popular in noisier circles.

StepSynth (free)
Scape (from Eno)
Beatwave (deeper than ever)
Animoog is still my favorite, but the previously mentioned Xynthesizr is something I also enjoy.
I still haven't gotten around to it, but I've always wanted to try the iVCS3 app.

Beatmaker 3 is a must have for me now. It's undoubtedly the most powerful beat maker I've found on iOS. Can't embed because on phone, but

It's dead simple if you want that and gets super complex (plug-ins, granular synthesis stuff, Midi, all that jazz) if you really sit down and learn it.

I don’t really have interest in drums/beats type stuff...but I’ll keep those in mind if I end up caring about it later.
Borderlands Granular has been incredible...as well as Photophore.
I am going through some SynthScaper tutorials now...
I’ll check out the Eno one as well...

Beatmaker 3 is an mpc style sampler, actually. Closer to a whole DAW than anything else.
If you like Borderlands I recommend Audio Layer and Audio Damage's Quanta. Borderlands joins the likes of Samplr as apps that are essentially abandoned.

Granted the Samplr dude now works for Apple, so there's a reason.

Beatwave is a matrix synth / grid sequencer. It has pianos, acoustic drums, and synth-like samples. You can also import sounds and randomize the sequence layers to use it for evolving loops.

Hopefully theres an older version available. I need to sit down and see what I can load onto it.

So, I've been using Nanostudio on my ipad 3 for years (which both are obviously outdated) wondering what everyone else uses if they multitrack with their ipads or do you play into a PC that multitracks from the ipad?
