I am going to go on a different tack from everyone else and suggest you learn a really bitchin' record front to back and play along with it. Like, really play along with it. Like you were about to get a call back from the band and have to play it start to finish with the peeps who wrote it play along with it. You'll learn a lot about how a particular band you dig does things by deconstructing them, particularly if you aren't planning on doing anything stylistically similar to them.

I used to do this a lot.
Particularly with early Mastodon records.
Might be time to get back into abrefular playing routine and address these issues.
