JCs are the best a solid state amp can be, better than some tube amps. Sunn O))) can also be good solid state amps, but they are expensivey.
P.S.This amps looks a tad metal-ish, but for the price, it looks great
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/prod ... sku=48004660 watt tube amp -$359.99

Hot Rod deluxe. I know they're 3 channel amps, but the clean channel is worth it. My bandmate's got one and it's LOUD and CLEAR...never uses the overdrive channels.
there're 2 on ebay right now for under $500. the shipping on one puts it a bit above $500 and I don't know what the shipping is on the other, but they're both great deals

Clean at what volumes?
Stage volume with a crazy drummer and an obnoxious bass player or studio/bedroom volumes?
18 watts will work for studio but they only really shine when cranked which is why people love them.
For stage volumes big tube amps or a couple of solid state amps will get you there.
In the SS world the Roland JC 120 is very nice, but the Lab Series amps are even better.
By far the best clean sounding SS amps ever made and they take pedals very well.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Lab-Series-L4-200-w ... 7C294%3A50This one fits your price range and will make your bass player crap his pants.
Oh btw Sunn makes amps, Sunn O))) is a band.
That's even worse than confusing vibrato and tremolo.

Sunn O))) is named after the amps, and they use the exact same logo and everything... is confuzzling
Sunn O))) amps are just pronounced Sunn anyway, because you can't say O)), so who cares If I write it that way?
Vibrato and Tremolo- I don't confuse them, but a lot of people do for some stupid reason- It's fender's fault for labeling their amps tremolo as vibrato and calling vibrato bars tremolos

I hate it when someone buys a VB-2 and says "It sucks. Sounds nothing like my dad's fender amp. I smashed it with a sledgehammer, burnt it, and danced on the ashes"

I think he's right on target -- for some reason the gain channels on those fender reissue amps sound like shit. But the clean channel is a pretty good approximation of vintage fender clean.
I played them for years...so I ain't just talking shit.

This is very true if you want clean, cheap (relativley/only when used), loud, and good tone go with one of these. I have the Blues DeVille which is basically the same except no 3rd channel and it's tweed, and it's 60 watts. I would seriously recommend one. The DeVilles are so goddamn loud that I never have to turn it up past 3 (I might as well have gotten a Deluxe

) so I would imagine that the Deluxe would be loud enough for you. And if you get one you'll have an excuse to buy a really nice overdrive.
