The Weber with the treble switch changed my mind about attenuators to be honest - it fixed a lot of the issues I've had with them, but I'm also not looking for massive wall of power tube distortion, just something to make the thing different (or dead silent when I don't want to harass the world).

Even the newer ones are cheap, just a slight wait time to have one built.

Is your primary complaint only the loss of highs when you turn down?

That's the root cause of the bright switch, which is just a small value capacitor that bypasses the volume control for high frequencies. If you are the LEAST BIT handy I would grab a range of caps in the 50-200 pf range and try them out between signal high and wiper of the volume control.

Hiring a tech to perform this mod will cost less than an attenuator.

Attenuators can be handy when you want to knock the grit or churn of a hard working amp down to polite dinner levels (and they are only partially effective at that since speaker engaging the room IS the amp's sound), if you're already playing the thing clean, it sounds like you just want the bright switch. Slap some puffs on it and see what you think.

I've only got it set for a minor boost on the thing now, it just sounds better than the Powersoaks of yore did beyond anything else.

No, not the lack of high (I have a bright switch on my amp and I never use it). I would say lack of dimension (lack of feeling).

i agree about the Webers. I have a 50watt Mini-mass & it's great. as other people mentioned, a big part of the cranked-amp sound is the speakers getting pummeled, but an attenuator can get some cool sounds you otherwise couldn't get - some almost fuzzy/phasey blown out sounds with everything cranked.
for clean sounds, though, i'm not sure there is much of a reason to use one (unless you have a non-master volume amp).
