It's doable but takes practice and work.
I prefer it for some synth bass stuff on the VI, but use a pick 95% of the time anyway.

I use my fingers if I'm doing really low key stuff, for quiet part of songs. Gets a softer attack than a pick.

So I messed around with a thumb pick on my guitar, playing regular righty.... since it's all down strokes, it's pretty cumbersome. I think I'll just check out a VI when I get the chance and mess around on it, see how it feels.

You can do upstrokes with a thumbpick too. You just gotta relax your picking hand. Won't have the same power as a flatpick though.

Roy Babbington of Soft Machine played his VI with fingers. Sounds cool too through a pushed tube amp.

Been fingering mine since I bought it. Recently bought a variety of picks made from different material. I like rubber picks for the bass vi. Wedgies specifically, both the soft and medium. Sounds like flesh but no bite that I get from playing with nails. I like them for faster, aggressive diddling but I typically stick to fingering. Feels better

For upstrokes treat the thumb pick like a regular pick, support your thumb with your index finger and have at it.

That's the hand position I have trouble with, where my arm freaks out.... thus the finger style question.

I sold my Squier VI but I used to hybrid/travis pick with it a lot. I think traditional finger bass playing was kind of annoying on it, traditional guitar finger style was pretty comfortable.

Oh, I forgot, here's Lindley playin' fingerstyle on a Teisco six string bass:

hmm I need to mess around with finger picking (guitar style) some more. I tried it for a while the other day and it wasn't bad. It was still a bit uncomfortable though...

Yep. A lot more impressive on VI that on guitar.

Oh, so, you guys're goin' in that direction?
Not that the The Gizmotron® 2.0 was a good idea the first time around, but, apparently, they make 'em for Bass VI now:

(They're not cheap either.)
