I had an Emma Stinkbug which was good, but not without flaw. Its tonestack was brilliant for a TS. Low knob, High knob. Shelves, with fixed mids. Turning both up gave a scooped effect, turning both down the traditional mid boost TS is known for. Didn't care for it sounding like a summing of clean blend with the affected signal, while lacking a blend control. Not my fav as a result, but that simple eq was outstanding.

Then I had a reissue Maxon OD880 which has no tonestack and only does the fixed mid boost TS thing, albeit with a series of TL072 chips instead of the 4558. It was great for goosing muffs, beyond that I couldn't find much use for it in my rigs.

Both displayed the rolloff characteristics around 120hz and the mid hump around 700hz, which are what I consider definitive to the sound (in addition to the rolloff above 5khz or so iirc...and the soft-clipping obv)

I think I ultimately prefer TS-9 to TS-808. You can find a good 80s one without breaking the bank. But I prefer the orig 808 style footswitch :idk:

Sho nuff.
My favorite non-pedal to create a TS type sound is a TubeTech Me1a or the Pultec MEQ5 it's based on :hobbes:
You could buy 2 of each and still have $ for an orig TS-808, TS-9 and more...instead of paying the asking price for SRV's 808 :whoa:
Pretty sure I saw it listed for $2200 sometime back in 2012 :|:

Never tried one, but aren't the analog man modified ones supposed to be pretty legit?

Feel like we are getting dangerously close to blues lawyerdom...if it wasn't Space6oy posting I would think this was a fake thread...

i'm just curious about which models people have had and like.
it's kinda goofy i know, but i've just never had one of them and they're a pretty historically famous distortion...

I frequently want to pick up an old ds-1 for similar reasons. Just such a classic thing. Only pedal I had for years, before giving it away to someone.

I think they are all more or less decent, for what they are.

Yeah, there's nothing inherently wrong with Tube Screamers. They have their place. Some are definitely better sounding than others though. :idk:

Here's a "Boss" Tube Screamer Pro for $120:

I briefly owned a TS7 9 to 10 years ago and have used a number of digital Tubescreamer emulations and clones like the DigiTech Bad Monkey and Arion Tubulator. The TS7 had the typical mid hump associated with this type of overdrive and extra gain on tap via its hot mode. I'm surprised Ibanez never released a higher-end multimode Tubescreamer other than the TS9DX, which only seems to provide various gain boosts as opposed to selectable TS808, TS9, and TS10 modes. I may be mistaken, but recall reading somewhere that the Ibanez Super Metal and/or Metal Charger are also Tubescreamer variants.

The 5-knob versions of the Ibanez Metal Charger, Ibanez Super Metal & Maxon Super Metal are two Tubescreamers running into one another (with very slight component changes between all three, I think), though their reissues seem to sound a little different (both Maxon's 4-knob & the mini Ibanez Super Metal, but w/e). The first two usually pop up 2nd hand for around $30, though people complain about the hiss with the older ones (I don't care?), & the shinier the example, the more expensive (also, most people just assume all three are "garbage" from a "bygone era", so again, w/e). Still the best sounding TS to my ears!

I think the BAT Witch Burner is the only tube screamer I've ever liked. Its been a staple on my board for some time now.

I had the TS-9DX for a while, was using it with a Rhodes. I think the hotter settings also had more bass, so I could get a nice bump without losing too much low end. I used an SD-1 with guitar briefly but liked the OD-3 better. If I really waned the TS sound I'd probably get the SD-1 again because symmetry is for grandmas
