I have an '80s Marshall 2x12, it's huge so I probably wouldn't get a 4x12 unless I had my own house or a bigger car.
My money would be on two 2x12s in stereo, each with their own head or one being a combo, maybe even with a 1x12 or 15".

If it were me, I'd get both and stack 'em, but I also insisted on playing bass through both an 8x10
and a 2x15* for a long time, so maybe that's just me.
* Each had a separate amp, of course. I'm not a monster.

If space is more critical than weight, a couple of 1x12 Thiele cabs (TL-806 or Boogie's version) loaded with EVM-12Ls or similarish Eminence can give something close to the sound of a pair of 4x12s. The cabs are supposed to be pretty damn easy to build from the ElectroVoice plans if you have the tools and some basic woodworking.
If 412s are only a bit too big, maybe look into slant-aligned 2x12s as an option. Marshall 1966 cabs are this style, same size as the 4x10 1965 cabs. Mojotone builds a near clone that is a couple inches deeper. And I've seen some Laneys on Craigslist that look like that size range. A bit more cab volume than a normal horizontal or vertical 2x12 but it'll fit in a smaller car trunk than a 4x12.

The 1966 was the one I was refering to a couple posts back. They're kinda hard to come by over here it seems, so the prices get a bit outragious imo. I'm in Europe, so mojotone unfortunately isn't really an option, thanks for the tip though...
