I think Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is the best wilco, and that is pre-nels. To me Nels is a little bit like misha of periphery (to cross pollinate threads a bit) in that I love listening to him talk about music and tone and his process, but don't always love the creative output. I do love that nels cline/Julian Lage album.

That seal fest video is so rad!!

I unapologetically love Wilco, though I'll admit their stuff in recent years has gotten more than a bit predictable, if still enjoyable. It's kind of benign. As others have inferred, Nels is one of the things that's keeping them interesting in the latest iteration.

I find him unique because he straddles the line between avant and much more traditional, melodic playing. He floats in the middle of someone like Ribot who's got a more atonal bent (and fucking awesome, of course), and the other pole of more lyrical, pretty playing that you'll hear from a player like David Lindley.

Anyway. He's one of my favorites.

Uh huh.

I'm always more than a bit baffled by the outright hatred. I mean, they're not like Mumford or something. Mainly I think hating Wilco is a cool thing to do, in some people's eyes.

But then again I will always hate a band like Phish and will continue to relish shitting on them, and that hatred flowing through me will always feel cool, so hey—not like I'm not guilty of the same shit. Hate on.

I think I said it in another thread, but how I feel about Wilco is how I figure people who don't like Radiohead feel about Radiohead. Like, I listen to it and it's ok but it's hardly the greatest music of our time and the like. Totally incomprehensible to me as a Radiohead fan, but entirely how I feel about the 'co.

phish on the other hand is fucking great.

Yea unfortunately for you they are on the same level bro. There is much hate for both bands. The key point though that you can take away from Collective Soul however is they can write a catchy song, while Phish can only write 30 years of stoned out utter garbage. ;)

Maybe you have nostalgia for them since you're such an old bastard.

Also the main reason to like Collective Soul is that Billy Corgan hates them
