Dude, you're on ILF. Reason has clearly been forfeit here for quite some time.

And I guess I'll need to A/B the Japanese one against the Korean model too...

For me the (Japanese) HM-2 seems to live exactly at the perfect realm between those two.

And then I'd better grab 3 or 4 boutique clones after that... Recommendations?

Re: LongFallBoots demos-SUPER CHEAP IKEA VALVE OVERDRIVE!

Post by longfallboots »

As promised: Here's the demo of the Little Bear G1 overdrive. It's actually not bad!

The gain range is wide - light crunch up to "Tweed On Fire Fuzz". The 6n4 valve that comes with it is kinda weirdly compressed in the midrange, but you can switch it out and popping a 12AX7 in improved things to my ears, and I suspect something even lower gain might be better still.

In case you missed it - this is me putting it together (it arrived as an IKEA flat-pack).

Hey that sounds really good. The design seems incredibly stupid though? No sides?

The design is completely stupid yes. No sides and the valve is sat right next to foot switch.

But cheap enough and good enough to warrant a rehousing?

Also, I should have mentioned in the video - the other gain stage is an op-amp as far as I can see. It might be interesting to swap that out too.

The whole thing is sparsely populated with full size components. Seems like a good platform for modding in general?

That sounds pretty freakin awesome. Neil Young steez.

Looking at past auctions, people snag these on ebay for about 2 dollars with 16 dollars in shipping.

Oh. That cheap huh? I guess then that makes a good excuse for the whole no sides thing

They do an upgraded version (the G3). I don't know what's upgraded about it BUT it does come in an actual box.... With sides and everything!

I've got one on the way to check out - they're not much more expensive.

That's cool stuff. I could use this for direct recording matters perhaps

Hmmm...Doesn't sound half bad, especially for the price.

Also, instead of rehousing it...Am I the only one here thinking WOODEN SIDE PANELS :omg: :omg: :omg: ??

Leaving the other two sides open would make sense to give the tube as much air as possible and all.
