Doomchime does sound like a Tolkien weapon. Like a flail or something.

Yeah, like a big ass mace, made out of some rare metal from the centre of the planet, enchanted with arcane powers. A resonating weapon that vibrates when crushing enemy skulls, creating both a rallying drone to allies, and a clarion of doom to foes.

Yesss. My favorite style of guitar.
Look into Saylor guitars out of Portland. they make cool unfinished bodies. Dirge/Skully uses them.
Pickup-wise, I'm a massive fan of The Creamery pickups out of the UK, and he's about to do a massive revamp of his line and they look great. He does everything from hot, to soft, vintage, modern, foil, whatever.
I quite like the tele bridges on my JM's, but I'm sure if you're just getting into jazzy's you'll want a standard jazzy bridge.

I'm starting to slowly gather parts for a Jazzmaster build myself, actually. I've got this set of pickups from Proto Guitars:

I think I'm going to wire it with one of these kits for series/parallel switching with a G&L tone stack:

I also have a black Mastery bridge and trem which I think I'll use on this. And I just ordered a semi-hollow (with f-hole) mahogany body from GuitarMill. I'm thinking I'll get an all rosewood neck when the time comes.... Oh, and a Tone-Guard black anodized aluminum guard! Jazzy!

I got my telemaster body from warmoth, but there seems to be better deals out there for just a standard jazzy body. I was in the height of my bachelor thesis stress when I ordered mine, so I said fuck it and accepted the $100 shipping and then later I got a $70 customs fee. So basically I paid fuckloads for mine. But the wood feels really good and the routs are super clean. If you're in the US I bet shipping won't cost you a nut and a half, and a standard alder body is like $150 or something

Warmoth bodies are definitely nice.
