I've never tried the long delay mode on my RE-20.
I recently (within the last couple of months) did the stereo/mono deal of plugging R-Out into L-In for more feedback and it's really helped me appreciate the pedal more.

I tried and it was just...off.
May have been a bad day but I've tried twice now.
I had doubts that I would hear a difference, but I'm noticing a difference in the way multiple tape heads drift differently and clash against each other. The long mode does that too, but it sounds like a clearer separation between them in short mode. But I also drank three beers so

Yea, it's a very minor thing, if I'd started it on the long mode and gotten used to that it's what I'd assume the thing sounded like.
Short mode though is so stinking close to my RE-150 I can't tell the difference unless I'm using the 150 in "well beyond factory spec" mode.

one thing that really pisses me off about the re-20 is the god damn clock noise. I'm running it on a one-spot bc I lost the dedicated adapter on tour once and never replaced it. What do I need to do to eliminate the clock noise?

No issue with clock noise, and I have it daisy chained on a Dano adapter with a ton of other pedals?

I've gone through multiple El Caps, I still own my RE-20.

Weird. Maybe I'll just get another Boss adapter and hope that fixes it. Or finally learn what isolated power supplies are all about.

I can't really speak for The Roland units, as I've only tried Guitar Rig's "Tape Echo" (Space-Echo) algorithm.
The El Cap may not be able to do everything an actual Space Echo can do, but it's great to have the ability to tweak the EQ, headroom, wow/flutter and crinkle of the repeats. Lots of wonderful sounds to be had. Changing between wildly different settings can be tedious, though. You can use a favorite switch, but you're limited to one preset, and it eliminates the ability to use an expression pedal.
That being said, it sounds
gorgeous. Despite what other strangers on the internet say, I think the reverb on it actually sounds pretty good too

Long time El Cap user, I took a keen interest in the RE 20 mainly because of the stereo ins/outs and the slightly easier tweakability got one and was impressed with a lot of what it could do but I didn't like the input volume knob mainly cuz it brightened my tone up quite abit.

That's what the Space Echo preamp does.
If it wasn't there, those of us who wanted Space Echoes would have stayed away!

It drove me insane for the longest time since I hadn't realized that it affected the volume even when the pedal was off so I spent a solid 3 months thinking my guitar was just really quiet.

From the manual:
The RE-20 features two modes to select from.
Normal mode: The REPEAT RATE knob functions over the same range as the
RE-201. Additionally, the maximum value that can be set for
the tap delay time is three seconds (when the MODE
SELECTOR knob is set to the 3 or 7 position).
Long mode: The range for the REPEAT RATE knob setting is expanded to
twice the normal setting. Additionally, the maximum value
that can be set for the tap delay time is six seconds (when the
MODE SELECTOR knob is set to the 3 or 7 position).
