STP originally formed in 1985, they did not put out an album until 92. Which was an amazing album that sounds NOTHING like any other grunge era band.

The Melvins is the only band that predates them by several years in formation. So they all hit the scene close to the same decade.

I personally think grunge was just a big fucking bunch of mislabeled bands who were wrongly grouped together, at least in the beginning. I mean, Soundgarden were pretty much like Zeppelin or something—TOTAL classic rock—and you could almost say the same thing about Alice in Chains. PJ were almost just as much, but just a different sort of Hendrix worshipping classic rock. They all got lumped in the spotlight after Nirvana, even though they really didn't have that much in common with them.

I think all of them have their merits, although I can't really listen to more than about 5% of that stuff. Superunknown is awesome, can't do AIC at all really, and PJ is the worst because Vedder is solely responsible for the absolute Jackson Pollock shitstorm of sound splatter that came after it. Creed, Candlebox, Seven Mary Three, Sponge, Seether, Three Doors Down—the list is endless—all of those deep-belting, over enunciated R, sensitive brogre singer choads came in a post-Vedder world.

Weiland fits into that a little bit because of his vocal style, but I don't think it's too bad. To me their style was always more melodic and hooky, a little more pop. I'll say it again—they weren't the greatest band from that era by any means, but I think they were a lot more than they were perceived to be. So anyway, yep, that's my spiel.

Tiny Music... is way better than the Pearl Jam spawn.

All of that stuff is just 70's guitar rock with big drums, though.
