And that post-rock sound creeping into doom metal and black metal, producing bands like Agalloch, Swallow The Sun, Myrkur, etc., is a pretty badass offshoot.
So, how exactly can we call bands that pretty much are playing music that sounds like Black Sabbath with hints of Pink Floyd post metal when it's practically a variant of pre-metal?

I think the best Neurosis is Tribes of Neurot. Love that album.

Yus. And the Grace/Times of Grace Zaireeka moment blew my wee 19yo mind. Still a fan of anything along those lines.

And Old Man Gloom is better than them all.

Anyone even mention Palms and I'll cut you.

I rely love how divisive that album is. Some people thin it's their best work since wp and some hate the fuck out of it. I like it, but think it welcomed have done with more aggressive tones.

Interesting, I looked it up and Palms is considered post-metal. LOL! What? I would have said smooth jazz metal...:)

Also, didn't realize Isis, Mastodon, Tool and a few others were considered post metal. Huh. Well. Fuck me.

Oh and Old Man Gloom rulz.

Tool's brand of post is the unfortunate case of two genres having the same name, iirc. Just like UK and American dubstep being two completely separate things at this point.

Mastodon I've always put into their own thing. I'm pretty sure by now their steez has been copied and morphed enough to be a new genre. Whalecore? Stoner meets sludge meets psych meets country.

People that like Old Man Gloom and trash Thrice neglect the fact that they pretty much sound like the same band.

Like Vheissu-through-Major/Minor-era Thrice after they were listening to and touring with Russian Circles... their post-metal post-hardcore phase.

I honestly think OMG sounds more like a post-hardcore band than a metal band.

Now Sumac, they're metal.

EDIT: In case it was not clear from this post, I thoroughly enjoy both Thrice and OMG.

I said better, not more culturally important. Big distinction.
