I had a TAFM and for some reason it didn't stick around... worth another try i suppose. my mini and fuck are two of my favorite dirt pedals ever

EDIT: after checking the AM site it appears they are $365 but he want to charge you extra for a standard 9v jack and doesn't look liek there is a default diode option, you have to choose which ones you want and they all seem to add to the cost. Weird. Could be wrong though/

they are $365 on the analogman site right now without any of the upgrade options.. which is you know... still a lot lol

A lot of people rave about the TAFM on here, but I haven't seen a demo of it yet that's made me GAS for it. Fuck, Mini, Buzzz, and Year 4545 intrigue me though.

Also, holy moly, I forgot how expensive Analogman pedals are.

nothing wrong with TAFM, but the sunlion is marketed at someone looking for a sonic clone of vintage fuzzface/rangemaster without the price and other issues involved with vintage pedals.

the analogman gets pretty pretty close to my vintage fuzz face, maybe its a little less noisy or something but its a lot closer than some others I have tried. i think its a pretty good deal if that's what you're looking for, plus it has a bias knob making it even more versatile than a straight up clone.

i assume most people are like me and are into pedals for all sorts of reasons. for me sometimes those reasons involve getting as close to the sound of a vintage pedal as possible for less money/trouble finding a vintage unit. guys like analogman, jerms, pigdog etc. selling their lauded $$$ clones are successful cause they are making some of the best sounding examples available. or maybe that's how I rationalize

for whatever reason you're considering the sunlion i wouldn't hesitate to give it a go, its a really great sounding pedal

I'm partial to germanium FF variants if I go that route. There's a certain sputtery goodness that a well-done one has that is glorious.

I only keep a few "standard" type fuzz circuits around, as I don't need every variant under the sun for when I just want a straight ahead sound for what I'm working on.

If I was buying off the rack, I'd do Analogman no questions asked.

For something like that I'd let my main pedal guy (who has an inkling of what I do, even if he doesn't understand it) whip up something for me, then start adding mods or stripping away the training wheels on a normal circuit and letting it get noisy and ugly if an option is switched in.

It's not very ILF of me, but I haven't heard a SS/BS demo that made me scream, "I gotta have this" and until I do, just not getting the hype.

The Beano Boost is one hell of a pain in the ass. Because of its germanium transistors, it has to be the first thing in line, as it has to see your guitar's pickup impedence, so I'm not sure how it works in the sun lion, with a sun face in front of it, but I guess the germanium transistors in the sun face don't dick up the Beano like a standard pedal's buffer would. At any rate, for the Beano to give you that dull ache in your testicles (assuming you have some), it has to be cranked WELL beyond unity gain, and be hitting the front end of an amp on the high gain input, with gain on the amp cranked enough to already be giving you some obvious fur. You can also add any manner of dirt in between the Beano and amp to change the character in numerous ways. In other words, you can kinda forget bedroom playing levels if the Beano is on. Seems like it's a stage effect only, cuz it would be hard to mic an amp at those levels. Have no idea how it would behave direct injected, cuz I think its designed to make tubes sing. I feel like adding a volume pedal between it and the amp to tone down the volume levels would defeat the goal of having its signal slam into the pre-amp tubes.

Might be ok if your amp has an attenuator and you can turn it down to 1W or something.

That said...first thing in my chain is a Beano Boost. Cuz what happens when you meet the above criteria and kick that son of a bitch on, for me, is pure shock and awe. For droney, dreamy, ambient kinda music...might be a challenge. For anything from Chuck Berry to Black Sabbath on the other side of the aisle, it amazes me.

I wouldn't worry about not liking the Sun Lion if you're considering buying one. Should be easy enough to flip if you don't click with it for some reason.

Be true to yourself bro. Some of my favorite pedals are non ILF loved pedals. The TAFM is great, but I've owned like 8 of them and never keep them. For me they just don't do what I want. That's fine though because each of us are different!

I've never tried an Analog Man and the price isn't that bad, so I'd hit it.

I too been there, wanted that. But ultimately chose to move in other directions.
Got the be-all end-all FuzzFace recreation; a Cornell 1st Fuzz with NOS NKT275s.
It booted a Fulltone '69 out of my collection & onto the trading block.
But I ultimately sold it because of the overlap with my Harmonic Percolator...the standard by which I judge all other fuzz as it was the first circuit I bonded with; and the only one to survive the dirtbox purge when my amp platform transitioned from American 100w solid state rectified to British 50w tube rectified circuitry. Other than a Telenordia TF-1 Filtered Boost...but that was traded toward the old Deja Vibe been using since 2014. Worth it. I digress...

I've swayed to the opinion "I don't need one of every type" of vintage fuzz circuits. Even DMMs. Even super rare pedals.
Other dirt that didn't survive the transition or aftermath: Yeah they'd all be cool to have again, but sitting unused in drawers for most of their days is a waste tbh.
Then again, I have too much awesome non-audio stuff stashed away to not be a huge hypocrite!

one of the new options now is a "4 jack" version, where you can patch the beano before the sunface, or put effects between the two if you want! that feature is probably that's tempting me the most. basically makes it two independent pedals for $200 each, taking up less space in the same enclosure.

yeah, i think one of my biggest interests is in trying to make such a classic sound work in music that is not that al all, but have it still sound amazing. i think i'll get one once my new BOA cash back credit card comes
