Haha every trend in there's like 10 years old...

BUT. Industrial/goth/synth is totally the new Misshapes or whatever the more recent iteration of that was.

As I said, I dig the music, but SPACE... "knowing" you, I don't understand how you aren't CONSTANTLY making fun of these kids' looks.

Well...ill say this. When i posted this i was actually talking about synth pop and not really all the shit everyone else posted. Its ok people usually take "synth pop" literally to mean somewhat palatable music containing synthesizers and not actually meaning a defined genre or stylistic choice.

Either way I think streetwear and fast fashion is repulsive and the absolute death of style. Heres a list of other fashion things that i think are garbage, and you should blindly follow because my tastes are better than everyone elses:

Sneakers that aren't made of white or black leather. This goes quadruple if you're over 30.
Streetwear
h&m and any collab they did that isn't with Alexandre Plokhov
The prada group
Tom Ford
Alexander Wang
Raf Simons after 2007
Anything "Co-signed". Basically the entirety of hip hop "fashion" for all of time.
The new Helmut Lang
Gosha Rubichinsky or whatever

Whoa I totally bypassed the first couple vids, I realized. Latched onto that Youth Code video and immediately all I could think of were industrial hipsters with black varsity jackets and nazi haircuts.

PS Tom Ford was dope af at one point but now yeah, cheese.

Tom Ford the designer was always garbage. Tom Ford the creative director was pretty good. This ad in particular remains one of my favorite of all time. I liked it so much the teenage me actually spent the $1000 for one of the tomb raider souvenir jackets. To this day the only piece of Gucci I've ever owned.

1. Miuccia is a saint.
2. That was uniqlo with Plokhov, and technically I think it was a collab Helmut Lang.
3. Gucci under Tom Ford was pretty good.
4. I liked Raf 08.
5. New Wave isn't synth pop.

1. Not taking into account that she was almost singularly responsible for putting men in tech fabrics and squared cinderblock dress shoes in the 90s, I was really talking about the prada group which was responsible for the decline of helmut lang and jil sander.
2 i wasn't talking about the 2014 collab, after the cloak demise either robert geller or alexandre plokhov did a collab with (I'm sure it was) h&m (but might have been uniqlo or something) that had a vest, some cropped pants, and some shirts or something. I can't find anything on it on the internet anywhere and its a shame there isn't a website solely dedicated to fashion history.
3. i am not a fan but like i said the only gucci piece I've ever owned came from his tenure
4. booo
5 i thought new wave was like the go gos and all that john hughes stuff from the 80s????

EDIT: JESUS JUST LOOK AT THESE THINGS, REMEMBER THIS SHIT?

Youth Code's music is sick. That video was an awful piece of empty punk aesthetic worship.

I don't understand fashion though. I kinda just dress like an ex-punk (Carhartts and baggy linen shirts, fishnets and scarves or shawls for the drama). I do remember those square toed shoes that were awful. But I wear colorful sneakers. sorry, SPACE. My back demands comfort.

I'll give the music another listen. But yeah, they look kind of Hot Topic to me—I guess that was just an immediate turn-off and my brain went to mockery instead of constructive absorption. :p

As for paying attention to high fashion, I guess I've just never had the patience due to my lack of suspension of disbelief. I always have a hard time looking at the offerings and not thinking "that is ridiculous—who could wear that in public?" It's a boring point of view, I'll admit. I do like the Hedi Slimane St Laurent stuff. And re: Tom Ford, now that I think about it, I was picturing his stint at Gucci... some of that stuff was pretty sick. And all that aside, A Single Man is a fucking gorgeous movie on all fronts: direction, cinematography, script, acting, all of it.

I pretty much stick to the kind of classic/modern/minimal menswear type companies (or as much of it as I can afford): Acne, APC, Band of Outsiders, Steven Alan. And it probably violates Space's "no streetwear" policy, but I do like quite a bit of the cleaner/plainer John Elliott stuff.

As for Synthpop, yeah I always separate it from New Wave (which I think of as being a broad arc of everything that was popular involving synthesizers in the early 80s), but didn't really have an idea of its origin point. Funny—just looked at wiki and it mentioned Depeche Mode and Ultravox, which I think of as being more the whole New Romantic thing, but I guess they sort of blend. Then Pet Shop boys... that definitely feels more synthpop to me. For the most part, even though I know it's got these earlier beginnings, I always associate it with groups like Ladytron, Junior Boys, Goldfrapp, all of which I dig.

I always thought this stuff was called "electroclash". I def dig ladytron either way though.

Did Psychic's post get deleted because of the word f _ _? Just curious—I understand if there's a blanket policy of just not allowing that word, but figured it'd be fine used non-maliciously by an LGBTQ person.

Anyway, maybe Psychic deleted it. FWIW, that kind of thing doesn't offend me in the slightest. And I was enjoying the weird little collection of topics floating around in this thread.

I reconsidered my post and deleted it. Off topic felt off topic.

Basically i said that fashion is hard and I don't care much about it inherently, but for my part i am less interested in high fashion and moreso interested in freaky people doing things that are conflictual, especially other people who fuck with gender and sexuality, but I have also been disappoined or hurt by enough lgbtq people to know that they're not any better than anyone.

I also mentioned that electroclash is cool and ladytron is cool and it's weird they had an album called 604 bc i thought that was a goa thing. Also goa trance is cool. Love 303s.

Ahh cool cool. I think this thread had been derailed enough already as it is, namely by me, so no worries there :D

Would've surprised me if they'd deleted that one, so mainly was just curious as to what happened.

It's funny—Electroclash just reminds me of being a college student in NY around that time. Man I hated that stuff, mainly because I thought a bunch of the sort of local standard-bearers were ridiculous posers, A.R.E. Weapons being and example. There was all kinds of shit coming out of that time that was getting lumped together though, a bunch of which was awesome. The YYYs first album and EP got thrown in the pile, plus somehow !!! were kind of under the umbrella as well. I never thought of Ladytron as being in that world musically, but yeah... they were definitely roped in.

I'll always appreciate the fact that they named themselves after some of the original weirdos...
