We're a month away from the birth of our first child and my wife's busy searching for apps to recreate womb noise. Apparently this helps babies chillax, which I'm led to believe is often a big challenge.

It occurred to me (a) that it might be fun to do this using guitar pedals and (b) that the ILF community contains a wealth of expertise in ambient sound-scaping.

So any tips or ideas for technique/equipment etc.?

At my disposal I currently have a couple of P90 guitars plus the following: route 66 comp & OD, Bit Commander, Nano POG, Mobius, Scarab Deluxe, Super Unpleasant Surprise, Super-ego, Supa-puss, Particle, Polara, Infinity looper and an expression pedal.

I also have a Count to 5 inbound.

I was just asking the same question regarding looping of sonogram sounds (ours is due around 2/28). I recorded the heartbeat and swishy embryo sounds for the same purpose. I'm going to loop the sounds and play it on repeat in iTunes. If you have another sonogram def. record it with your phone. If you want, I can post the sounds when I get around to looping them if you want to use them (if that's not too creepy).

I was going to suggest hella noise through a series of resonant and non-resonant low/high/band/all pass filters. Maybe some reverb in the middle to smear the sounds a little.

Not to change the subject but what is the Super Unpleasant Surprise?

That's the moment when you put the contact mic inside the womb without telling anyone, I believe.

I don't know if this made it overseas (I hope not, frankly) but there was some youtube celebrity who surprised his wife with a pregnancy test -- as in he, like, stole her urine and tested it without her knowledge and then, on camera, was all "holy shit you're pregnant with our fundamentalist hellspawn," or words to that effect.

I mean you lost me at 'youtube celebrity' but HOLY SHIT WOW.

Has anyone messed with using a buddha machine for sleep noise? I was thinking of doing that.

Honestly, that's all bullshit.
Your kid will either sleep through nuclear war or they will wake at the drop of a pin.
Sometimes, it's a bizarre and horrendous combination of both that lacks sense and consistency.

Good luck trying to simulate the womb in real world, though.

Jaded prent, signing out.

I use a Buddha machine app to get myself to sleep and I don't mind it, but if my kids have anything but fan noise going on now they generally don't settle.
Keeping in mind I have a 3 and a 5 year old so it's a lot different from a newborn.

man my wife can't sleep with any noise so I get to fall asleep to the dulcet tones of her snoring and three dogs licking themselves in unison.

First time parent. 3 or 5 seems like very, very far off in the future and I hope it stays there.
