Recommend a Delay

Been gassing for an Obscura myself. Affordable, compact, stereo i/o, tweakable analogness,...

Obscura is digital though.

It is. Didnt know you weere after an analog delay. Fwiw, the best sounding analog delay sounds I heard came from a digital delay. It was a vmsd, flipped it cause it was a pita to operate. Which is why I wouldnt mind grabbing an Empress Tape Delay someday. But even with more affordable analog-ish digital delays its imo often nearly impossible to hear the slightly different degradation of the repeats when you're in a loud/live band situation, and the digital alternative is usually cheaper and obviously not as limited in terms of modes, delay time, etc...

You already know that ofcourse, and I'm not trying to talk you into buying a digital delay. Especially not if you're after a minifooger, they're supposedly the shit.

Oh, I'm not specifically looking for analog, I prefer digital usually. But yes, I haven't heard a bad thing about the minifooger delay.

An interesting idea (if you don't mind digital) is to use the Boss DSD-2 and put a feedback looped modulation pedal into the trigger in...works kinda crazy and makes use of stuff not being of use.

None of these have modulation: Arion SAD-1 is good too...but I felt it to be a bit mushy (and I have delays with character I like more). The DOD 480 and MXR (of the same era) are both awesome (CCD based).

The Meet Maude is a great delay, but it might not have enough attack for bass.

Minifooger Delay doesn't modulate either (but you could use a copilot broadcast or something into the exp in). But that is a great choice.

Boss DD-5 can be modulated too...with something like the copilot broadcast into the tap tempo (and it sounds awesome). On that note...that boss wazacraft one with an LFO would probably be good too.

Maybe check out the Seymor Duncan Vapor Trail and the Pladask Gjengangar? Both have effects loops.

Gotta add the eightytape In Limbo 2...because that thing is a monster of awesome (and will get one!)

Red Witch Violetta. I don't even like modulated repeats, but this thing gets really creepy and seasick and wide-open sounding if you want it to. Also oscillates really beautifully.

I just bought an ibanez es2.

Its cheap, analog and manages to squeezes out 1000ms delay time, has tap tempo (I don't use so cant comment) and the weirdest modulation I've ever heard. Def worth considering.

I love mine so much, the tap tempo is better than an expression in for my uses because I can constantly vary the delay time just by tapping and get oscillations. The modulation is also fucked up weird in the best way.

It looks like it might be awesome! I'll keep it in mind for sure. Currentyl waiting to pay for my CT5, and after that I'll need to decide between getting a Bitquest and having it finished in Rainbow Sparkle unicorn giz or just a delay.

This looks really cool, and I love the enclosure. I would say though that judging by the names and number of controls, it looks like a Casper Electronics Echo Bender clone, though those are no longer in production, the schematic is out there.

The Ibanez Echo Shifter is really cool, though the proprietary power supply is a nuisance. The modulations are really cool.

Also, no one has mentioned the TimeBender yet. You ever have one? I love mine, and they come up for fair prices still sometimes.

The Obscura does seem really cool, I personally love the timebendee because it can do standard delays, or 5 second reverse or modulated pitch shifting expression control of everything. That said, i kinda want an obscura too, bc stereo delays 4 lyfe.

My 2 cnts about the tb:

Theres a couple unique modes inthere, and its super rad if you care for the endless pitch shifting possibilities. Plus, its fairly compact for a digital delay this versatile (tap tempo, top jacks, looper, stereo, pattern options,...), and its as user friendly as big ass digital delays get...

BUT...The repeats are way too quiet, they hardly cut through in a band imo. It seems to vary depending on what mode you're in, and on how you dial in the tone control. But it never really gets as loud as your guitar's signal, unless you go 100% wet. There's nothing inbetween for some odd reason.

Also, the different tape/analog modes sound really really similar, though that might partially be due to the quiet repeats....

With those limitations and overly trippy shit, there's not a whole lot left that I could use that something smaller/cheaper cant do...

The Keeley Caverns pedal looks cool too, though my Afterneath has lasted the longest on my board out of any other pedal.

I should just get another Bitquest.

The volume loss does drive me insane, and is a huge problem with the timebender. But as you said, only in certain modes, and driving up the mix and creatively tweaking the tone knob does make a difference. Also, using the harmonized repeats helps it stick out in a mix. I want to try modding it to have more volume on the repeats, but I am terrified to open that fucker up. But then again I paid $109 for mine, which is as much as a PS-3 would cost me. (Don't get me wrong, I want a PS-3 as well.
