I've always thought that Portishead were one of the only groups out of the mainstream-ish trip hop movement that had real staying power. Some of the other big bands out of that era that got a lot of attention (Morcheeba, Esthero) were still plenty good on their own (even though I'll jokingly refer to it as "hair salon music"), but I don't think they held a candle to Portishead.

Definitely Tricky's stuff though, and Mezzanine... also XTRMNTR, even though I wouldn't really put it in the same category, more like roughly the same era.

Geoff Barrow's project BEAK is pretty awesome in terms of current offshoots. Also I think it's funny with all of the 90s worship these days that of course trip hop stuff is coming back. Hello xx, London Grammar, tons more. Once again though, nothing as cool as Portishead.

Also, some of this guy's stuff gets into that realm, but more hip-hop leaning. Nonetheless rad shit.

Of course let it be know that he called the record '95 Mindfulness after the year in which he was born.

I am old.

i love XTRMNTR, only album of theirs i've ever dug, personally. but i'm into electronic stuff too.

morcheeba are cool, but NOTHING like portishead IMO.

never heard of esthero, will have to check them out...

also hadn't heard about beak, nor the other "coming back" acts...

Beak is great. It's Krauty.

For me, Morcheeba and the other vaguely similar bands of that time were just overall really... pleasant. It was nice to listen to and just sort of enjoy whatever you were doing, but I wouldn't ever really call it engaging. To me, Portishead were always so much more abrasive and started to get kind of confrontational with their sounds, much more interesting.

should've seen how confrontational geoff was w/ the sound guy in chicago... appropriately so though.

no it seriously was appropriate. beth's vocals didn't come through beginning of the set. right after some hideous noise band.

Oh I'm sure it was! Wasn't doubting that. There have been several documented cases of him chewing someone out online over various things, and it's pretty much always been warranted. He goes full throttle though—it's pretty entertaining.

My ex always used to complain that listening to Tricky made her nauseous. I love him.

Parts of Vincent & Mr. Green's self-titled might apply?
