So today I went to Long and McQuade in town to look for loopers, and tried out a 7 string Jackson while I was at it. Like backwardsvoyager said/wrote, the designs for 7 strings suck; only metal and prog-metal looks, but ESP make a tele bodied style 7 string, and Ibanez have a jazz box with a seventh string.

More importantly, I like the idea of having the widdly widdly high strings in standard, and an extra low one so I can still do my down tuned riffs like nothing is weird. I certainly can not do apreggios or even complex chords cleanly but I don't want to either.

I have nothing to add, but I'd like to get a 7 string and tune it to open G like those Russian guitars. Maybe even open Gm so I can easily make barred chords major if I need to since I've always been too lazy to bother in open major tunings.

I have an Ibanez RG8 only because my local guitar shop got one in for a good price. I am constantly lost, kinda wish I had went 7 string first to get the hang of it.

mm i don't know many people that have gone straight to 8 string without playing 7 for a bit first, i think once you work out how to play with one extra string you can keep adding more strings with it being less confusing.

one thing i should also mention - i don't always like the way 7 strings sound through a lot of gear people would normally use for 6 strings. my schecter is great and has really clear sounding pickups but it's still a bit of a PITA to get it sounding right plugged in sometimes, and i tune the low B string up to C so it's not exactly that low. maybe that's just my rig though.

Just finished putting this together, still needs work on the neck pocket.

Cross guitars neck, strider13 custom bridge, seymour Duncan bridge pickup, novak neck pickup. I HATE metal, prof, and jazz, but put this together for some interesting chords, tunings, and baritone parts. It still isn't set up 100% but sounds great so far. String spacing is tight, so I would recommend wider than 1 3/4" on the nut if you build one.

In that first photo, looks like the headstock decal reads "Cray" and it is, indeed, cray.

I really love extended range guitars but I have a hard time finding one with a balance of affordability, passive pickups, and body/neck woods I'm not allergic to. My Ibanez S8BK was nice but the walnut skunk stripes gave me rashes.

I have one of the cheap, bottom of the barrel LTD 7 strings and actually absolutely love it?!

I have no idea what pickups are in it but they're perfect for going into a rat pedal and clean head. I tune mine down to A with the two bottom strings at the same pitch though, so all the chuggy parts sound extra heavy and a little murky.

Word of warning: ya'll better not fuck around with your warm-ups/stretching if you're going down the 7/8 string route or they'll fuck you up good and fast.
