Honestly, so much of music for me is contextual. It really depends on the artist, the song, the day of the week. I've been chewing this over, and am trying to come up with a coherent answer. But it can be:

1) The sonics
2) The lyrics (as long as the sonics are there)
3) The songwriting (structurally, that is)
4) The beat
5) My history with that song, and what it makes me remember (mood / moment / whatever)
6) How I'm feeling that day (there are artists that I can only listen to at very specific times for any number of reasons)
7) My physical space (there's some stuff that sounds better in certain environments, or in certain situations)

There are so many exceptions and bylaws... there are bands that I'd love to see live, but don't want to listen to recorded... there are bands that I love on record but hate to see live... there are bands that I love in memory, but never want to listen to again... ye gads.

So I guess my answer is: "yes."

These are some great points that have taken me some time to realize. Saves me money though

really everything but choice one don't get me wrong I think melody and being catchy is important but, on it's own it's meh, good lyrics are important but everyone resonates to what they do, but you can't fake it when you mean it, it doesn't matter what the style is, if you aren't putting your all into it you are nothing to me
