@PeteeBee: Unless you have a friend IRL who has the same guitar and can come over and let you play it through your setup, with whichever pickups he/she has, you just gotta take a chance. That's what I'm planning to do, after sending the pickup guy an email of course, asking for his opinion/experiences.

Choosing pickups is hard, yo. Personally, I like taking chances on gear. The guesswork is part of the fun, and I don't really have any 'sound in my head' that I have to nail exactly.

@waltdogg: I'm also eyeing a pair of Phat Cats on the used market here... Dumb question maybe, but can you easily remove the covers on those? I've never had a guitar with covered pickups, and I don't like the look.

lol. we took a chance on the Phat Cats coz they were cheaper than any other 'bucker sized P-90 option. AFAIK the covers are potted on, so getting them off would be quite the challenge and even then you'd probably not wanna do it because you'd end up the sides of the coil exposed leading to the potential for debris and sweat getting in there and damaging/shorting the pickup.

Ah, I see.. well, I won't be trying that then, haha. I don't sweat a lot when playing (don't ever play under hot stage lights), but I didn't know you could short out a pickup that way. I guess that's in part why open-coil pups are taped...
