I don't think it's just you, haha.

I think the Line 6 M9 suggestion is not bad off. Can probably pick one up used, find what sounds he truly likes and what he doesn't like. Easy carry solution. Easy power solution. Expression pedal gives lots of flexibility. Resale won't completely tank.

The M5 idea might be pretty solid...

But I'm always a bit weary of steering an effects novice in the driection of 'budget' gear. Not that the M5 blows, I know it's packed with really nice delays and reverbs and what not...

But don't you guys think the fuzz/dirt inthere might give him the wrong impression about fuzz, instead of...well, kindling the flame :idk:

I asked about multi effects and it seems like he really wants to go down the individual route which is far better imo. I have a Wah pedal my old guitar teacher gave me and its only ever been used once live as we were doing a cover that involved lots of Wah, ill likely just recommend a cry baby wah seems standard.

It was but a joke, good sir :poke:

Multi FX are boring. One spot, daisy chain, diy board, a cheap delay, another delay or reverb, spend the rest on fuzz. That's where all the tasty flavors are.

I use a boss dd-7 as a reverse delay and a looper. When you get used to the switch you can get quite accurate loops of up to 40 seconds. The analog delay mode is decent too. Also has expression control over any knob in case you wAnt to get crazy in the future. I think that would work well on this sort of board. I'd also consider a fuzzhugger like the algal, arc flash or suneater. All three of these do great overdrive and fuzz sounds. The arc flash especially is stupidly versatile for its two knobs. I've even used it at the end of my chain as a clean boost!

So while not multieffects per se, these type of pedals will let the player experience a range of different sounds and either lead to new well informed purchases or they can pull double duty during a gig with a little quick knob tweaking.

Also, the replacement for IKEA's gorm is called Hejne, and it makes a really nice pedalboard. Slap some Velcro on it and hit up a second hand shop for a suitable case.

Pedals boards are awesome!... but, pretty much unnecessary. I would skip that purchase and use the extra scratch on the effects.

One Spot power supplies are cheap and work well.

If your friend is plays a lot of lap steel I would recommend a chromatic tuner so he can make sure all the cool open and modal tunings are sweet.

I LOVE WAH, especially with lap steel, but I can't recommend a new off the shelf unit as I have not tried any recently. I have a home made organ pedal wah and and old Maestro Boomer II. Wha is a toughy. As one astute comment-er noted, starting out with a sub-par sounding effect may turn the person off to that effect entirely. Perhaps you can pick up an older Thomas Organ made crybaby with the extra scratch from skipping the pedal board. That would be a good starting point but they can be hit or miss. I would definitely steer clear of any Dunlop made wah. Given the choice between a J. Dunlop wah and nothing, I would go wah-less, and I LOVE WAH.

OD: I don't know what amp is being used but often times turning an amp up until it overdrives makes for a very nice overdrive sound (sorry to sound all TGP).

FUZZ! I LOVE FUZZ! I have not played a commercially available fuzz in many years so I really can't recommend one but definitely get one. FUZZ is AWESOME with lap steel.

REVERB. Yes. Springs still make the coolest, most non-realstic, not of this earth, realistic reverb sounds available. No Slinky algorithm will suffice. Get a spring reverb.

DELAY: Delay is important. Arion SAD-1.

New to loopers. I have an EHX 360. It sounds nice but I would not recommend it do to its propensity stop functioning mid song which requires a power off and reset to resolve.

Agreed on all accounts. The reason I suggested the DL-8 instead of the DD-7: It's pretty similar, but usually seems to cost considerably less on the used market.

Hejne: Good call. Don't suppose you (or anyone else) happens to know of a good case for a Hejne board? Something widely available and cheap I mean :)

I also kinda agree with SoaringTortoise btw...Imo an actual board should have the lowest priority when you're shopping for pedals on a tight budget and not playing out regularly :idk:

Haven't checked cases that would fit - I've just got mine in a suitcase. I think pedal boards are important because they drastically reduce set up time and the risk of something going wrong by kicking out a patch cable or something. Fancy pedalboards are unnecessary but a pedalboard as such I think is an investment in peace of mind and being pro as fuck at gigs.

DL-8s are rad. Ex bassist used to have one, but I haven't played one myself. Probably should get one one of these days...

You are correct. I hadn't thought about it, but...no, not a ton of wah people here. They all hang out at ilovewah.com.

Yeah my dreams are a lot more than $500 ;) at that price range, new, you're looking at all boss or joyo - which isn't too bad, but i agree that a multifx is probably wiser, then address individual deficiencies of that pedal with one or two special items. I would go vox tonelab, by far best value for $ that I have heard, and then maybe add an echorec (would be awesome w slide) and a bat pharaoh for proper grit.

Ha! I'll check that one off of my dastardly deeds list, then.

I do sense an opportunity arising...perhaps we can just fracture the already insane world of pedals into a ton of warring sub-fora.

iloveshimmer.com
iloveringmod.com
ilovebucketbrigadedelay.com

Most of those are probably porn sites already. Please don't prove me correct.

If you want to get spring reverb with actual springs, check out the danelectro spring king. I've always been intrested in them for some reason. They just seem to be fucking cool. Super cheap used as well
