I can see why the Rat Tail is supreme. I can't believe how good it sounds, I'm so floored. I've always avoided Rats, thinking they sound bad. Boy I'm sooooo wrong.

Just my 2cnts, but if a sales pitch makes a big deal of the "quality parts", and there's no actual circuit improvements worth while...You might as well save a couple bucks and get one of those Proco Fat rats, or a modded Rat2. That's not aimed at anything in particular (or maybe just one) that's been mensioned in this thread, just sayin' :idk:

The Rat Tail looks ligit though, and so does the Volt Thrower. That's just based on the clips/reviews/specs I checked, never had to chance to mess with either or em.

I hate to recommend it with all these MUCH nicer alternatives out there...But I can't deny the Mooer Black Secret sounded really really close to the ProCo rats I used to have, if not identical.
It's ridiculously cheap, but also annoyingly tiny, and I can't vouch for the long term reliabiliy of the pedal, nor of the business ethics behind this flood of chinese micro clones...

Alright, so I got a second rat. Don't shred on me deluxe. Holy christ, this is pedal is INSANELY good, I think I like it more than the rat king! At least with guitars. Haven't tried it with bass yet. I am so stupid for not trying rats before :picard:

So the problem is, after years of not liking how RATs sounded with my old bass and amp, it turns oit the Blower Box is maybe my favorite straight ahead dirt iave ever used on bass. So much so that I am considering another RAT clone just to have around. It retains the lows so well, it blows my mind. Guitarist in my band used it to record our new demo, and it sounded great. I don't know, I feel like such a raving fan, but the Blower Box wil be with me for a long time.

Then again, I was REALLY considering getting a Dunn O))) Deceiver on Black Friday...

Yeah, the Blower Box is freakin' killer. Matt really nailed it with that one.

Had a Rat Tail for a couple of years, when I still played both bass and guitar. But since I moved to a baritone ECG, I was no more able to get a goos sound, because of the high output pickups: the sound was always muffled with a strange limiter-like effect on the attack of the strings. I really love the Rat sound and I tried dozens of them in order to resove this issue. Beavis Audio FKR and the new Lone Wolf Plague Rat are clearly the winners. The FKB is absolutey the most versatile of the bunch, while the Plague Rat has those thundering low frequencies than can be the joy of all doom or sludge players.
You're not a musician, you're a low frequencies generator!

Cog Effects TK-421-X is also one of my personal favs, especially on bass.
One of the very few that have a low pass filter on both your distorted signal AND clean.

Demo in my sig.

Rat Tail/Rat King are awesome. The IdiotBox is awesome sounding but it's a bit further away from the normal Rat sound.

I love the MXR Bass Distortion on bass - no idea how it sounds on guitar though.

VFE Alpha Dog is excellent. Most versatile, vintage chip, great customer service if needed.

I absolutely adore my blower box for bass. Yes the low-end is retained and it just gets this ripping distortion sound. Ive always liked peoples bass tones while they used rats and when I tried a regular old rat it sounded like absolute dogshit. Then I tried the idiotbox blower box and I'm getting that crushing full rat sound finally!
Fuzz, reverb, delay.
