Available in Japan, look for one of the Maxon Fire (Scarmbler clone) pedals, you should at least be able to try it out and figure out if it's for you or not.

But if I'm not mistaking the French Toast is actually a small mod away from being a straight Tone Machine clone. Small enough for a diy treatment though. For the money it's a killer octave fuzz for sure.

For years I used a ProCo Rat on bass into a Vox Essex solid state bass amp.
Sounded good.

I tested a few fuzz pedals on this track (so it's super sloppy), but I used a
Basic Audio Squarewave+ on the bass for this. So you might be able to find
some Squarewave-based fuzz in Tokyo that would work similarly.


Like with the last track, I was testing various fuzz pedals on this track
as part of a fuzz tour box. The bass starts clean then at around the
24 second mark I turn on the Basic Audio Fuzzmondo.


Both of these songs are things I wrote a really long time ago,
so in each instance I was testing fuzz pedals and trying to
remember the song at the same time (thus the sloppiness).

I agree with rfurtkamp, if you can try out the Maxon Element series
fuzz pedals, then you should definitely do so! Something in that might
work out. Some of them have added EQ controls that might make the
circuit work well on bass.

Mountinking Behemoth is stellar on bass and synths, doesn't work with guitar though...infinite sustain and incredible textures. Under 200$

I mean technically it "works" with guitar. the fuzz and filter have an obvious affect on the sound, its just the waveform knob doesn't seem to have much to any effect. The clipping voices are more distinct on bass. Plus the filter sweep seems far more suited to the lower frequency range of a bass. Overall the "sound" of the pedal is far more pronounced with bass vs. guitar. There is more texture on bass whereas on guitar it sounds more muddy. Its a mainstay in my bass rig, I don't know that I've tried it with baritone or bass vi but I can try it out if you're interested.

There's a vero layout out on tagboardfx if you're open to building it yourself.
Otherwise I'd suggest a Woolly Mammoth, Proco Rat, Malekko B:Assmaster, maybe even a Death by Audio Fuzz War (I'm about to build one and it seems to have a nice bass response but don't hold me to it).
Another DIY venture would be the Moosapotamus 360 Bass Fuzz (I think he stopped selling them or something).
Also, I figure pairing anything with something like the Catalinbread SFT/ROG Ginger will give you nice results.

I could be wrong but are you thinking of the Joyo? Their TM clone is almost exact, but I thought the Dano was a proper copy.

Since you're in Japan, I'd imagine you could pick up a used sobbat for cheap.

The previously mentioned Infanem 141 seemed a bit too noisy for me but their Driving Notion seems cool. But not a fuzz. Might be interesting for later though (and also for the modular). Anyway, many videos to watch.

The 141g is only noisy if you turn the oscillation up. At tamer settings its pretty smooth.

Driving Notion is amazing. Im on the hunt for one right now.
