Bedroom/recording amps?

Cheap and Fendery, just find a used Hot Rod Deluxe, get a half-decent attenuator with DI to mix with a mic'd signal in the room, and go to town, well under your budget and controllable volume for the small stuff.

hot rod deluxe is a pretty good sounding amp. my friend just picked one up for his cello for his bedroom/house (not much different at 750sqft when over 250+ is dedicated to the kitchen dining)

I've got two blues deluxe for my stereo set up, great sounding amp. It's far too loud for bedroom/practice levels, also to get the best tones you really have to crank it. Is also a great platform for pedals.

BD you have to crank more, HRD is a little more forgiving with the right tubes (and the older Emi speaker).

It came alive when I rolled the dice on a Weber Mini Mass with DI option (flipped the treb boost to +3 and bang, amazing).

My bd are originals from 95, never swapped the spkrs but had good results rolling the power tubes for some nos RCA. I've never tried using one with mine but rfurtkamp has the right idea using an attenuator. I just go with a lower wattage amps for lower spls.

Yea, the originals from '95 were fun boxes, I came very close to buying one at the time but was still rocking the Bassmans and Jazz Chorii. OG one (and probably the RI) will have Fender "Special Design" Emis.

I'm reeaaaally looking to avoid the Hot Rod Deluxe. Never heard a good thing about them and I always hear about them needing repair because of shitty solder welds and stuff.

I like Fendery cleans more than Marshall stuff though. Jet City seems to make nice amps but they're just not what I'm into tonally. I just need a good clean and I'm set.

Same dude. I've tried out a few and they were ok, but I feel like I can definitely find better out there around the $300-$500 range.

There's a certain baked in tone that the Hot Rods have that's very "meh" sounding. When push comes to shove I'll take the HRD because even half broken they work better than other amps. The issues they have are either bad solder connections that are easily accessible and easy to flow new solder on and the other issue is the top facing up control panel, dirt and crap falls into the jacks and can short the footswitch or preamp out or power amp in jacks.

I remember having the Super Champ XD for a while too.

It was fucking awesome with the voicings and the FX, but I had to sell it, would buy it again if I didn't have my Champ and Zoom peds.

I haven't been in a shop or looked at a catalog in so long I have no suggestions lol. Nothing lower wattage that doesn't suck at least. Without the attenuator the HRD is way too loud for home use. It seriously goes from 0-2 and that's all the volume adjustment you get.

It's like 40w right? Yeah that might be a little too loud. I'm thinking maybe I should just sell off my amp and cab and grab an old fender champ or champ variant for recording and then find a cheap old Peavey Classic 30 or something if I start playing live. I have a really old trashy 20w ss peavey practice amp and even that gets pretty loud pretty fast.

6w should be enough for recording some shoegaze stuff at home, right? I'm lovin the clean tone of these little amps.

That sounds like a pretty good plan to me. In the bedroom, my Micro Terror is loud. My AC4C1-12 will make my ears ring. I really think anything more than 4/5/6W, at home, is gonna be more of a hindrance than a help, if you're after tube tones. That is, unless you have some good isolation. And, one thing about the Champ, I've found that I don't like any single speaker setup smaller than 12", for guitar. Smaller might record fine. But, I want it to sound right in the room for me, too.
