I can attest to the simplier compressors not working so well in this setting. I tried the Jen Dynamic Sustainer and Boss CS-3....both just worked about like an eq without the gain. The attack/sustain controls really do nothing. I think to truly test this, I would need something more like what you are using...and they might be useful elsewhere for me to have aroud (recording, etc). Thanks for the tips man...I think it can really help mellow/tame those spikes in treble when switching in my noise setup.
I haven't tried the boost/overdrive thing yet (mostly because I put my steroid od and angel ring away and can't for the life of me remewhere I hid them when I went on vacation...probably in the most obvious spot). The steroid OD does have a limiter and three different boost on different eq bands so it might work well.
Thanks again for all the suggestions...it's helped a lot in getting this thing going and ideas.

Yes (that's why I initially peeked into the thread), I have an old Alesis 3630 that sits in the feedback loop on my live noise rig. I find being able to squish the ever loving shit out of an already unruly signal is arguably a more responsive effect than anything else in the chain (which changes all the time). Ratio, threshold, recovery gain, these put a lot of sway on the noise angle, though I usually avoid compressing the entire mix. So, imagine a stereo loop of dirt and gain being sculpted by compression returning to a relatively clean mixing device of some sort that is getting pounded out by other shit.
Hey, thanks for this post. I was thinking about this kind of thing last night: using a compressor at the end of the loop of my superego to sculpt sound while keeping get levels consistent. Like going from full wet on my verb/delay to full dry and messing with gain pedals for blown out tonal changes without crazy volume spikes. Can you describe how the ratio/threshold/make up gain controls affect a signal in you context?
That Alesis looks like a bargain.

I still haven't gotten back around to try this (been so sidetracked). But yea, that post by crochambeau was awesome and helpful (as usual). I was going to try my little limiter I have...but I still don't have a compressor for this application (probably should just get the Alesis).
Good luck, kbit. Post if you find anything or make a demo comparing and stuff. The more information the better.

Eagerly anticipating the reply, but in the meantime kbit If you know how compressors work you can suss out the generalities.
Here's a good resource:

Pretty good information find there D.o.S.. Never really thought about sideband before and multiband. Could have some neat results.

What did you end up with? I use comp into od/bass dist/fuzz, delay, reverb to manage the signal--similar to what you're doing, but I don't want it to get too out of hand.

Been sidetracked on other stuff (mostly ring mods and general guitar practice). It was mostly to blend channels in parallel. I have an Alesis 4046 sitting here waiting to be tested...I haven't built the switch setup though...and my 669 is still on vacation in Texas.
I rarely run a consistent board or setup and usually run under 5 pedals in each setup. So there is really nothing to really saw "that's what I do" even though I haven't done anything haha. Also, I don't run not-guitar setups as often anymore.
Will try it once I get all my stuff done and can get it all setup.
Check out crochambeau's SoundCloud. There might be some clips that feature the use I was talking about. RMA already had this one covered haha.
I will say that before I went back to ring mod homeland, the o.D., boosts, and sime "character" compressors were not giving me the results I was looking for at the time...I have gotten better at finding my guitar's volume knob and using delay to cover my tracks haha...so been kinda controlling things that way.
Maybe kbit or D.o.S. can chime in with their thoughts though.

Oh man, my soundcloud is a dumping ground - so please don't judge me on it.
I am about to commit a noise session in which there will be ducking, sequenced switching and other things applied to noise. I'll see if I can slice a little out and upload to bandcamp (because they don't destroy the file quality with over eager data compression algorithms).

Haven't been doing much noise stuff lately, so I haven't had a chance to dive in since I last posted here.
