You can still find the Visual Sound Garage Tone phaser out there for $60 or less new. People seem to like them, supposed to be an Electra clone that is a variant on the Small Stone.
I haven't seen a good cheap trem that does the full square-wave on/off thing I like or a hard reverse sawtooth for less than like $125 new. If you can deal with the flimsy plastic, the Behringer Trem/Pan is supposed to be an electronically solid clone of the Boss PN-2. $25 new--that always tempts me, though I guess not enough.

An aggressive tremolo can be one of the coolest, most beautiful, most dramatic things going.

Hmm, the soundcloud embed doesn't seem to be working. Look up Tim Hecker's The Piano Drop.

It's a pretty fun little pedal, i use it on two outs of my headrush in my drone rig. Tremolo is definitely really useful for drones, adds a lot of movement, especially if you have separate signal chains.Gone Fission wrote:You can still find the Visual Sound Garage Tone phaser out there for $60 or less new. Oy. Now I want a tremolo again. Goddammit. I have a line on a cheap bad stone. Maybe I'll just grab that and build a Vox repeater clone.

There is a company or two doing Repeater kits with the funky unijunction transistor provided so you don't have to source one. That's been the only holdup to me DIY-zing one.
The Kay trem does a choppy square wave thing and uses readily sourced transistors, so is easy enough to perf or vero without a kit.
Oh, and if you can deal with some building, Gigahearts/Lacesensor/Ian has some Lovetone Doppelganger clone boards for sale on eBay now that'll do a compact but full featured clone. I've done these, and while not the easiest build, it's hardly rocket surgery. Doppelganger is a great phaser/vibrato, and you can put a resistor across the poles of the expression jack for super slow sweep cycles, fantastic for the drones.

I love the Arion Stereo Chorus and Flanger, though I've never tried the Phaser. Gonna have to track that one down.SoaringTortoise wrote:The Arion SPH-1 Phaser is a great sounding swirly, spacey, blissful box of modulove and they are dirt cheap, though you will be hard pressed to find one with all the knobs or the battery cover still intact.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

I have an SCH-1 Chorus as well but need to get a hold of the Flanger. At least we aren't competing for the same pedal. First generation (model numbers ending in "1") Arion modulation pedals are some of the best sounding sleeper pedals out there, better than the Boss units of the early and mid eighties. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for their OD and Distortion boxes, which puts them right on par with the Boss units from the same era.jrmy wrote:I love the Arion Stereo Chorus and Flanger, though I've never tried the Phaser. While not cheap, Meet Maude covers delay, oscillation, and randomish vibrato/chorus. I loved running Superego into a fully wet mix MM for instant Boards of Canada.
If you're willing to menu dive, a used Boss GT-001 will give you an obscene amount of fx control for around $200. Not the most pedalboard friendly though.

Doppelganger that I mentioned has vibrato along with phase, if you want to build one. The Behringer VB-2 clone is supposed to sound right, too, again with caveats for plastic construction.UglyCasanova wrote:I can't believe I'm the only one who has said vibrato...

I ended up getting an RV-5 for a good price. I need another verb and the mod verb sounds pretty nice.
